Interestingly enough many of our yankee friends not only hate the humidity and heat but also hate it when it drops below 40 degrees here. Plan well for both and ride, ride, ride!! It won't cool off significantly until probably mid-September. Keep hydrated, don't ride at your top speed, keep a nice container of very cold water in a gallon thermos with some nice towels to cool you off after a ride. If it is really bothering you buy a nightlight if you don't already have one and ride after 8:30 at night. You can always hit the trails very early in the morning while it is still in the 70's. Those of us who have learned to endure enjoy the year round riding we have and stay on the trails light, dark, 95 or 35, year round!!

mid september, thats a long time, i am trying to deal with the heat my best riding has been done back home when it is 10 - 20 degrees and once running creeks and streams freeze up and become intersting single track and you can ride for miles on ice and snow
thanks for the advice

Don't forget that a cool one after a ride makes life good again! When I got off FATS today, I started pi$$ing and moaning about how hot it was and how I needed a cool one...Next thing you know, one of the multitudes in the parking lot offered me a cool one.
WOOHOO!!!!

I'm afraid your best riding is behind you then if you don't adapt! It is a rare occurrence here to get ice and snow & I've never seen a creek or pond freeze hard enough to ride a bike on. We don't like to ride when it drops below 35 (and that only happens a few times every winter if at all) since we don't have the gear for that. Sounds like your best bet will be those early morning rides while it is still in the 70's. Your fellow mountain bikers will also thank you very much since you'll clear the webs off the trails

Hot yes, but in comparison to some of our inland Florida trails, HK offers full shade, lake breezes, and a close-by room with A/C and/or a cool-one - whichever comes 1st...... Great safety net - if too hot - jump in the lake !
As my posts below highlighted, been visiting your area last few weeks. Must of have a bad weather blow up in HK area - between week of July 17th and last weekend. Noticed many trees down coming into McCormick from east / north. Then - riding Lakeview - especially the first "point" out into the lake - new downfall - mostly pines, some big. Moved what I could solo - but now there are 6-8 on Lakeview, 3 near the lodge trail, and a couple on Turkey that may will require a saw.
Yup - hot is was - went through a 120ml backpack, during two loops and 26 miles........ usually drink about 1/2 that amount.
Sure is nice to get a friendly wave by the park staff while riding in HK ! They probably were shaking their heads - riding when 95 ?
Trails dry when I was there - but as much as there is posted "do not ride when wet" someone did between these same dates. Lakeview has some pretty deep ruts in some of the exposed clay stretches. At speed - no problem. At slower speed - they can grab....... as I'm sure you all know...... Turkey and Beaver Ok.
Anyway - great trail work & thanks for letting us outsiders visit and enjoy. The "Bucks" at HK are used to riders. Had to wait to go around two "6-points" of size - sort of said - we're here 1st - you wait......... so I did, and had a few sips of water...... probably where my 120ml went.......
Cheers, Ron Chuluota, Fl.
