FATS is under official temporary closure by the US Forest Service. A major system rolled through and has already dumped app 2 inches of rain locally.
ALL local trails will be saturated, please avoid using all local singletrack until we can get information from our trail champions on trail conditions.
More rain is in the forecast forecast for tomorrow.

FATS is still under official USFS closure, please do not access the trail system until it is officially reopened. A trail check revealed there are still many active seeps but they are slowly reducing. The trail needs a couple more days to dry out.

FATS> Trail system is still under official USFS closure. Update> The system that was moving our way on Monday veered northeast. Although we did get about 12 hours of drizzly rain through midnight last night we only picked up about a quarter of an inch of rain. We did lose an entire day of drying time but will be working with the USFS and checking trail conditions frequently. In the meantime check out some of our other great trails! sorbacsra.org/Trails/Trails.htm

FATS Update>
FATS is still under official temporary closure by the US Forest Service.
Unfortunately a trail check today revealed there is a lot of ground water still seeping onto the trails. The aquifers are still very full. In some places there are wet areas of 100 feet in length. There was addition rain today but it was very light (does slow surface drying although should not add to the groundwater). Thank you for staying off the trails. We know it is temporary but we are just as disappointed as you are.
Stay tuned we will keep you up to date.

FATS is officially back open per the US Forest Service. Thank you to all the trail users who respected this trail closure to protect the trails!
Again there will be the usual seeps and mucky spots so please stay in the middle of the trail to prevent widening. As each day passes without rain these areas will improve.
The work being done this winter on the tread will help improve some of the areas. Other areas will need more extensive work.

(1/22/21 11:22am) We had a few hours of mostly light rain this morning. That should not add appreciably to the ground water but the tread is wet right now. Please wait until tomorrow to use FATS. Majority of the trail tread should be fairly dried out by then. Thank you!
Trail check yesterday evening revealed there are still active seeps (for perspective about 3 dozen wet/mucky spots on lower Skinny) but they will continue to dry up as the water table drops.

A system rolled through this morning fairly quickly (2 hours). Initial reports look like between 1/2 and 3/4 inch of rain. Please give the trails 24 to 48 hours to dry out before you use them. Stay tuned for updates!

(01/27/21 noon) More rain rolled over us starting in the early morning hours and moving out at noontime today. Please don’t use FATS until it can dry out some (we’ll give an update on Friday). Other local trails should be okay by sometime tomorrow. Thank you!

Okay to use FATS! There are still some wet and mucky spots but the vast majority of the tread is good to go. Please stick to the middle of the trail to avoid widening it. Those wet areas and mucky spots are from active seeps. More rain is in the forecast for Sunday. Our other local trails will have fewer wet/mucky areas.

(Jan 31st 8:30pm) A large system moved in about 7am and hung around for about 12 hours. Project FATS will need 48 to 72 hours to dry out enough to use. Stay tuned for updates. Other local trails will dry out a little more quickly.

FATS Update - trails need more time to dry out!
Spot checks of both north and south trails at FATS indicated the trail system is going to need at least another 48 hours to dry out. They received between 3/4 and an inch of rain so the aquifers have filled back up again many active seeps. Please ride/run elsewhere to help preserve these trails!! Thank you.

FATS update> unfortunately the water table out at FATS (south trails) is still high and causing a lot of seeps on the trails. More rain headed this way for Friday and Saturday. Outlying trails will have some wet areas but should be good to go.

FATS is under official closure by the US Forest Service. Water table is still high and there are many active seeps. Please share this message with others, respect the closure and protect these trails.
Stay tuned for updates! In the meantime consider the following trails for your Saturday ride/run/hike Keg Creek, Bartram, Mistletoe, Horn Creek or the trails at Hickory Knob State Park.

FATS Update> FATS is still under closure by the USFS due to wet trail conditions. Had additional rain starting app 2pm on 2/6 and ending 2am on 2/7. Please respect this closure and help protect these trails we all love to use. We will give periodic updates. There are other trails in the area currently in great condition, ready to ride, that don’t have the abundance of seeps that FATS has. sorbacsra.org/Trails/Trails.htm

FATS Update>
Trail check revealed that the groundwater is slowly going down at FATS but there are still too many active seeps. FATS needs to dry out for a few more days with no additional rain. Everyone who loves this trail system is disappointed but please utilize other trails in the area during this closure. Thank you! We will continue to give you updates.

Local Trails Update>
Several waves of rain have pushed through dropping over two inches in the past couple of days. A couple of local rivers have flooded and that will impact local trails as well. The colder weather and overcast skies also impact the drying out cycle once the rain finally moved on. Groundwater was already high before this rain moved in.
This is extremely disappointing for everyone who loves to use our local trails but important to understand the damage that can occur if users access the trails when they are saturated. FATS is still under official closure and will probably remain under closure for another week or so. Other local trails are not officially closed but with all the added rain, they too will need time to dry out.
Going to the CSRA Trail Conditions page on Facebook will often give up-to-date information from our trail champions onboard the other trails.
Please share this information with others and select other places to ride and run. The many miles of gravel road in the area (we can suggest some routes if needed), the North Augusta Greeneway, the Augusta Canal Towpath, the Evans, GA Evans to Lock Road bike path, the Euchee Creek Greenway near Evans/Grovetown, the Palmetto Parkway Bike Path, North Augusta, SC all provide great options during times like these. Combining the North Augusta Greeneway, Augusta Canal Towpath and the Evans to Lock out and back can give you nearly 40 miles of riding.

Still another system rolled through between 4:30 and 8:30pm on Feb 15th, this one included a thunderstorm with heavier rain. Rain so far for the last 7 days is at about 3 inches.
FATS is still under official USFS closure but we will be working with the USFS and giving you updates.
Stay tuned for updates! Thank you!

Trails Update!
A quick note> FATS is still under official USFS closure, stay tuned for updates.
Finally some beautiful weather so the trails can begin drying out! With about 4 inches of rain in just over a week things are still very wet. Stevens Creek has been over flood stage twice in the past week. Generally that means flooding with some debris on Modoc, Wine Creek and Turkey Creek Trails.
Our trail champions will be reporting in on the conditions of various trails moving forward. For interacting with others about the trails you can join CSRA Trail Conditions on Facebook!

Trail check at FATS shows the seeps are starting to shorten some, that means the water level is starting to drop. FATS is still under official USFS closure and observation is that trail users are staying off the trails. Thank you!
We work closely with the USFS and will keep you up to date on any changes!
