I'm new here so please bear with me. I live out near the base & I ride the Palmetto trail because its so close to my house & with gas prices so high I can't always drive to Harbersion. I know alot of you might not care about the trail knowing that not alot of people ride it unless you live out near Sumter National forest. The trail out off Leesburg RD by gate 5 needs some work done on it I've got some people who want to help but I'm sure we could use more. Theres no date set on when we're going to do this but after the storms we had last week parts of the trail on in really bad shape! Plus theres some of it is overgrown with trees & weeds. Theres places where you cant see of another rider is coming at you untill its too late. Just wondering if anyone here would want to help. It would be a real shame to let this trail go to pot Thank you!

SSRider, This is going to be a tough sell to this group. One, we are all over an hour from Columbia. Two, we have 100 miles of singletrack to maintain down here. I think you will have better luck pitching this to folks that live at Fort Jackson or at least in Columbia.

I dont see how this would be a hard sell. It seemed no problem that people drove from all across the state to help out it Sumter. Is it because this isnt a sponsered event? I find it hard to belive that everyone on this board is an HR outside Columbia. I guess if people at Harberson needed help people would flock to it.

Look, we are based in the Central Savannah River Area - read Augusta, GA and Aiken, SC. Now - go look at your map. We are an hour away from Columbia. No problem.....brother you have no clue all the trouble we went to host the FATS Grand Opening day. It was months in the making. Now, we have "work parties" all the time in which there is no grand celebration. Just 4 or more folks giving of there time with little fanfare and recognition. I see your situation as more similiar to a typical workday at one of our local trails than being similar to the Grand Opening of 15+ miles of new trail that took 10 years to get to that point. I stand by my statement that folks from the CSRA are highly unlikely to drive an hour to Columbia to work on a trail in which folks from the CSRA would not drive an hour to ride on any given day. I stand by my statement that you will be better served to appeal to folks that live closer to this trail than folks in the CSRA. Good luck.

Ok I understand that your based out of Augusta but out of 40 people who have read this thread no one is close to this area? I know people who live in Sumter who are members of SORBA Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt this for riders who live in the south? Didn't SORBA do some work in the sumter national forest a while back? I really am not trying to give you a hard time about this. I did think I could get some more help here with this thats all. I know some people closer to Columbia who are trying to start a local chapter of SORBA up this way. I guess I'm thinking A hour to drive isnt too bad to help out. Thats the end of this post I wont bother anyone again with it.

SS Rider - we certainly understand your plight and believe me we feel your frustration. Getting volunteers out to help on the trails is definitely a challenge for any group trying to maintain trails. As stated above we have over 100 miles of trails in our area and we struggle for enough volunteers to keep it all maintained and that shocks us considering our local group is nearly 150 strong.
A recommendation to you. Start with the few of you that ride the trail and want to enjoy it right now. Organize a few work parties (preferably work/ride parties so you'll combine the work with pleasure). As it begins to get cleaned up, spread the word about the trail so that others will come and ride it. Once you see other unfamiliar riders on the trail invite them to come join you in other work parties to continue to improve and maintain the trail. Your best source of help are those folks who like to ride that trail on a regular basis and want to keep it at it's best!!! : ) Best case scenario is you end up with a nicely maintained trail and a good group of folks to ride and work with!!

In this area getting people to work on a trail that not alot of people ride on I'm afraid isnt going to happen. Harbersion has people that meet for trail work almost every two weeks or so. The problem with the Palmetto trail is that most people in this area only ride where everyone else rides. I guess its a place to be seen ( like starbucks) I wrote to people who say that maintain the Trail they got there own message board. Well that was three months ago!!! I've only ran across one rider who goes out there & I didnt have a way to take down his phone number. I'm about to just wash my hands with this idea of getting any help. JimmyC thank you for that post you gave me but theres something have to pay to ride with other people that worries me, and the fact I have to sign a waiver in case I get hurt worries me more.

I just sent SORBA my $35 renewal fee and I may have signed waver, that's part of it, just like McDonalds coffee. But then again before the this chapter was formed my riding parner and I would chainsaw and clean trail on our own. Like the waiver you speak of you can't chainsaw anymore without having a safety and training course, because somebody sued so somebody Not to sound harsh but if driving across Columbia is to for you to ride then maybe driving hour 1 1/2 is a little to far for me. If you want this bad enough you can make it happen weather you get a club involved or just leave flyers at the local bike shop.

I am not sure what SSrider is talking about regarding the Palmetto Trail cleanup, but THERE IS NO WAIVER! The event is part of National Trails Days and they will be working to clear some fallen trees and such. I plan to be there to make sure they keep us mountain bikers in mind and keep the rideable fallen trees where they are.
