Well my old Crank Brother Mallets finnally bit the dust. I managed to rip the pedal off the spindle while riding Bartram this weekend. So looking to get replacements. I narrowed it down to just the plain old Egg beater or the candy. I like the mallet, but it is a bit much for these trails and I have flat pedals for truly technical/downhill type riding. So I just need something for XC use. I like the idea of the candy having a little platform, but don't quite sure if it really does anytihng or if it is just a marketing ploy [at least that seems to be some of the indications on the websites our there].

I have been using the Egg Beaters for over a decade now and absolutely love them (several friends also have been using them for nearly as long and feel the same way).
I also have the Mallots as well on my trail work bike since I sometime don't use my bike shoes if we are doing trail work. After using the Egg Beaters for so long I prefer them if using my bike shoes (to using the bike shoes with the Mallots).

I’ve been riding the Candy’s for a few years now. I wanted to try eggbeaters, but they were never in stock when I needed them. Well I finally got a set recently, first ride on them was this morning on my commute. I don’t think I can tell any difference while riding. I do think the platform makes it a little easier to clip in on the Candy's though. That said, my next set of pedals will be Shimanos. The Crankbrothers just don’t have the durability of the Shimanos. I’ve never broken mine (lots of people have), but I’ve had to rebuild several sets, totaled one set, and have a pair right now that somehow ran out of any lubricate, they sound dry as a bone. I’ve got to take them apart and put some grease in. The problem I have with switching brands is I’ve now got three bikes with Crankbrothers pedals (ss MTB, geared MTB, and the roadie). Changing brands will not be cheap….

dgaddis1 - When you do change up brands, I'll be happy to take your used CB pedals off your hands...

If you do, you should know the history of the pedals. From the looks of those, I'd pass. This is especially true if the rider has never ridden clipless before. Clipless pedals develope a "feel." If they're your pedals, you understand the nuances of the "feel." But if they aren't your pedals, you will find that at times you clip out to soon and other times not at all....and perhaps fall over. YMMV.

Maybe I was too subtle...I was thinking about the eggbeaters with one ride on them Those blue candys look in rough shape loved - rougher more loved than any candys I have in the worn out parts bin.

I've been riding them since after Fools Gold 2010 (which killed my old Candy's). They've been rebuilt once, after Ted was borrowing a bike and the bearings seized and the body unthreaded off the spindle. It's not a bad idea to rebuild Crankbrothers pedals every year to prevent that^^. Even then, they may need service between rebuilds (as one set of mine does ATM).

I do think the platform makes it a little easier to clip in on the Candy's though. I would go the other way on this. Straight EBs are easier to clip into because there's no platform to get in the way. And the Candy platform really does nothing IMO.
