Most of you know I've been building and repairing wheels as a hobby for a while now. In fact, I've done work for a lot of the regular posters on this forum. Well, I've taken the plunge and sent off a (big) check to an insurance company and have opened my own wheel building business. For those of you one the fence, I had Dustin rebuild a set of wheels that I originally built a long time ago.
I'm a big guy...250lbs right now but I've ridden much heavier than that. I'm not a particularly good climber. I run a 1x10 (32x36 being my smallest gear) and mash the hell out of that gear all day long. I have to make up for my climbing deficiencies by going as fast as possible down the other side of the hill.
Big weight+banzai descending+gear mashing=a rebuilt wheel every 6 months or so.
Dustin build my White Industries MI6 hubs on some carbon rims and I haven't had to touch them since he built my wheels. Not a tweak or turn on either my front or rear wheels.
Take it from someone that built wheels for the winner of both the USAF road and XC champions...Dustin's the real deal. For many people factory wheels are fine. For most people, I believe that Dustin can build you a wheelset that is:
Tailored to your weight looks damn fine is easily repairable is backed by an actual person who'll go out of his way to make sure you're happy...even after the sale CHEAPER than a factory set...you'd be surprised what a good quality custom wheelset costs
And take it from me...carbon rims are the way to go. There is a bit of an investment up front but I'll never ride another aluminum rim on my MTB.
