I'd like to get out of the area and ride somewhere new this weekend. But I hate to drive...so max 2 or 3 hour drive? Where should I go?

+1 on Jmyers suggestion - hard to go wrong with two distinct trail systems at your disposal. Pisgah if you like a trail experience more like our Keg Creek or Mistletoe and Dupont State Forest if you like the FATS experience more. Be sure and get maps either way! Enjoy.

Pisgah is completely different than Keg Creek. WAY more technical and way way way way more climbing. But quickag probably already knows that.

To call Dupont, and especially Pisgah, trail "systems" is to elevate trail systems everywhere.
I recommend Bull and Jake in GA near Dahlonega. They are also not systems.

Okay got it, but if not trail systems what is a better way to describe them going forward so people know there is a multitude of interconnecting trails that they will really need to buy maps for?
sys·tem /ˈsistəm/ Noun A set of connected things or parts forming a complex whole, in particular. A set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network.

And just for clarity, Dupont is also different than FATS with a whole lot more climbing as well but among the riders I know - those that tend to prefer the experience of our more advanced trails tend to like Pisgah better and those that tend to prefer FATS seem to like Dupont better (and there are exceptions to that as well)!

Ok changed my mind again...don't feel like driving all the way to Pisgah by myself. Anybody have a .gpx for the Bull/Jake loop? Hey...maybe we should have a repository for .gpx files for all the trails. I'd be happy to host them in a public folder on my box.net account.

For a short drive, go to Heritage Park, on 441 south of Athens (exit 114 I-20), maybe 10 miles north of I-20. Very fun trail, Boyd Pond on steroids. More climbing than you'd think for a trail in this area. Some areas will be slippery if wet, may wait until Sunday.

Bull and Jake are big fun .. Have only ridden them during Fools Gold but definitely good times. www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5350433.pdfPisgah is the best ridding I have ever done anywhere ever! Stopping at the HUB or at sycamore cycles, both located right at the entrance to the forest, they have maps of Dupont and Pisgah for sale and all the advice you need on where to ride and what to expect. I love the guys at the HUB, very helpful. The Swank course is great fun ,,, there is one legendary descent down Farlow gap, that will change your perception of where a mountain bike can go. First time down it I walked more than I rode, but good times for sure! The rest of the swank course is just big fun, fast, more technical than riding in the CSRA but very doable. www.blueridgeadventures.net/swank/SwankMap.jpg
