A few shots from this weekend's Georgia-lina Bike Summit! The keynote speaker at the reception last night was Dennis Markatos-Soriano the Executive Director of the East Coast Greenway Alliance. They are twenty years into a vision for an East Coast Greenway that runs from Maine down to the tip of Florida. They have actually made a lot of progress! Read about it here www.greenway.org/index.shtmlSome of the people and/or organizations instrumental in helping the CSRA gain the Bronze Level Ride Center designation: Chrissy Westerberg (Senior Park Ranger - US Army Corp of Engineers), Bill Victor (founder and past president of SORBAcsra, owner of Long Cane Trails, LLC and builder of Baker Creek, HKSP, Bartram East and FATS trails systems locally), Tom Sauret (founder of SORBA and IMBA-SORBA Executive Director), Susan Messick (President of SORBAcsra), Paul Farrow (past President SORBAcsra, currently Executive Vice President of IMBA-SORBA), and J. R. Kirkaldie (District Ranger of the USFS Long Cane Ranger District). The award! [/img] Good sessions including: - a rolling session to the North Augusta Greeneway
- what other communities are doing to create safe routes for schools
- best practices in bike event planning
- creating biking routes and mountain biking trails for universities (the plan outlined was for Clemson)
- adoption of a new statewide Complete Streets policy by the GA DOT in September www.dot.ga.gov/doingbusiness/PoliciesManuals/roads/DesignPolicy/GDOT-DPM-Chap09.pdf.
- bike share programs
- issues surrounding biking accidents
- bicycle crash data for Georgia
- collecting data on bicyclists and pedestrians
- multi-use trails - recreation/transportation
- and other sessions!
This attendee was spending his time between sessions in the ultimate tailgating session. Take a look at the back of his bike and note the propane bottle. He was roasting corn and making S-mores on his bike grill!!!He was happy to expand the "use" of bikes and share his findings with everyone. An important thing to remember about the Bronze Level Ride Center award that the CSRA received today, a community cannot receive designation as a ride center based solely on its mountain biking trails. The criteria evaluates the entire community and it's involvement as an overall biking community as well as the amenities available. It is not a permanent award and will be re-evaluated every few years. We see this as a great start not an end!

Didn't see that guy's comment lol! And honestly unless your bike was broken, I've never seen you riding along at 5 miles per hour...... hard to be a two-wheeled terrorist at that rate of speed. Aiken must have some really old folks riding out on their roads and if so the sweat would not bother them since they aren't likely to be heading to work!

Gotta tell you though, I have never been referred to as a "two wheeled terrorist" before! MD A lot of people are idiots. I was going to use different words but I think it would probably be my medication talking. I just shake my head and feel sorry for people like that...they obviously have much bigger issues going on.
