A mountain-biking buddy and I headed to Petersburg Campground early this past Wednesday morning for four days of riding in the area. FATS was closed for deer season which in our case was just fine since we both had ridden there a number of times but had never ridden other area trails such as Modoc, Hickory Knob, Wine, Turkey and Keg.
A month or so prior to riding there we had ridden for four days at Pisgah in some incredibly wet conditions. Upon arrival at Petersburg I discovered that the crank on my bike would hardly turn. We had very few tools, but did manage to remove the crank, and pull the bearing seals. Both bearings were rusted in place which was a surprise since I had ridden the bike a couple of weeks prior to that and everything seemed fine.
A web search revealed that Chain Reaction (706-855-2024) was not very far from Petersburg so I dialed them up. When I explained to the lady who answered the phone that I needed a new bottom bracket for my bike, she mentioned that their mechanics were booked up for days but I could speak with Todd. I explained my situation to him and also mentioned that if he had time to pull the old bearings I could install the bottom bracket. He told me to bring in the bike and he would take care of it. He went ahead and installed the bottom bracket while I waited and I was quite pleased with the very reasonable labor charge.
Todd was extremely neighborly and even took time to tell us a few things about the various trails we intended to ride. My thanks to him and others at Chain Reaction who kept a long-awaited trip from being disastrous. As it turned out, we were in the woods by early afternoon on that day and finished up with Bartram/Wildwood at noon on Sunday. Of course, being extra-nice to customers often pays off. I needed a new pair of bibshorts, another jersey, spare tubes and several other things and ended up spending close to $300.
Now that we have ridden most of the trails in the area, our vote goes to Modoc as the best, with Wine and Turkey in a very close second place. And, wow, is it powder dry!
Our good luck just kept on holding out. On Saturday we had the great pleasure of bumping into Azdrawdy and Yetichick in the parking area at Hickory Knob. Nice meeting both of you.
