Now that it's October what are the rules with hunting season? Is riding restricted outright on any of the trails, or is it more of a "watch your back or a redneck will tag and bag you" type of deal? I was wanting to go to bartram lake alone today to ride but I'm a little nervous, even wearing orange. heh -ed

I have never heard of a local trail being outright closed for hunting season. As you called it, watch out for yourself or you may be tagged and bagged.
A few brief rules of thumb/good things to know.
We have three trails that forbid hunting 24/7/365. The Canal and the two SC Parks, Baker Creek and Hickory Knob. On Saturdays, or early AM, late evening rides (prime hunting times), go ride at these places.
There is no hunting on Sundays on any of the trails that do allow hunting in South Carolina. If you ride on a hunting day, it is best to do so at mid-day, not early AM or at sunset. It is now legal to hunt on private property in South Carolina on Sundays. So, the sections of the old Tower like Lost Dog, Buzzard Chute (they are on private property, not USFS lands) are not really cool to ride even on Sundays. Someone is paying to lease this land to hunt and prolly wouldn't appreciate you being on it.
It is illegal to hunt from or across any legal trail on WMA lands. It is illegal to have a LOADED weapon on a known trail on WMA lands.
DON'T WEAR WHITE DURING HUNTING SEASON. Ever seen a deer running away from you? Looks like it is wearing a white t-shirt. Hunter orange is really the best, better than red or yellow.
Note for the future. The FATS will have riding restrictions (closed trails to all users except hunters) at certain times of the year. But, this trail isn't built yet.

I don't recall the exact date but, it was sometime late last year. We were driving in on our way to the red barn when we saw two men dressed in full camo walking out of the woods on the left side of the road. They were carrying climbing stands to a pick-up that was parked beside the road. This was on the road that the barn is on. Paula asked me about it because I had told her they didn't alow hunting within HKSP. All I could could think of was that it must be private land there...

I knew there had to be a benefit to being a FL Gator fan in the middle of USC/UGA country. Thank god that my team's colors are orange. ;D
I braved Bartram on Saturday and didn't see a hunter. I'm debating whether it's a good thing to wear my iPod while riding alone on a hunting day - the question is: Do I want to hear the gunshot, or would I rather just die a happy, oblivious man? heh

I am not sure where the exact park boundary is, but it may not be all the way out to the main road. As a matter of fact, I am sure it is not. After turning off Hwy 378 at travelling towards HKSP main entrance, the lands on the left are owned by the ACOE and are open to hunting (WMA managed). This would be true all the way up to the park boundary, but not inside the park. The Park itself is owned by the ACOE. South Carolina leases the land from the Army Corp that the park sits on. So, it is possible for someone to park on the side of the park entrance road, and walk into the woods to legally hunt and still be outside the park.

Caution should always used but I personally think that early in the hunting season (since all these hunters have waiting many months to hit the woods again).......it would be prudent to be extra cautious and follow the guidelines listed above by members who speak from experience.
