Brian, I'm planning to arrive for the early ride, but probably won't be able to keep up with the hammerhead group. We can bring up the rear together if you want. MC

When you register and it asks about food preference be sure and mention if you want vegetarian food. I have a good recipe for black bean veggie burgers I made last year will just need a basic count.

Looks like we already have a great group of people signed up for cookout and ride on Saturday! Be sure and sign up now if you haven't already, we will shut down the count on Thursday at midnight so we can get the food so if you haven't done so sign up! Right now, subject to change of course, looks like the high will be 84 and only 10% chance of rain (subject to change of course!). Always love to ride this trail system but seeing old friends and meeting new ones is always a major part of this gathering. That many bikes and gear in one place ends up being like those great times in the parking lot after rides when everyone is swapping stories and talking bike!

Rode the trail Sunday. Started at Fell, dodged a bunch of apples, looped around for a total of 20.5 miles. Great time. Looking forward to the coming weekend. We are camping at HKSP with a bunch of friends, and plan on seeing even more at the Fell.
Trail was dry Sunday (duh) but should be perfectly tacky by the weekend. See you all there.

Reportedly Greenwood received about 1/2 inch compared to our 1 inch yesterday but there is a 60% chance of scattered showers on Friday.
Keep an eye out here for a posting before heading up to Greenwood on Saturday. Will probably be fine but since that trail allows horses it can be a problem if they get out on it today and churn up the muck - we'll be checking with the guys from Greenwood before heading up! Thanks.
Saturday looks great with no chance of rain and high of 82!

Can anyone give me an idea of what the c-d-e-f section is like? Is it just more of the a-b-g terrain, or is it less/more elevation change?

Can anyone give me an idea of what the c-d-e-f section is like? Is it just more of the a-b-g terrain, or is it less/more elevation change? C - d- e -f is all old school LCHT.....it's great. Well, first you have to ride from Fell to C. Mostly a steady climb out of C where there is a nice creek crossing. And a gravel road descent to D where there is a second creek crossing if you get off the gravel road to the left side and ride the creek crossing. There is one somewhat techy spot just before you go under the RR crossing. It is easy to walk if needed. D to E is rolling, mostly climbing. E to F starts with a .75 mile section that is just super. Techy in spots, with a nice descent and climb out. Once you cross 505, it is just stellar all the way to F. The locals call this section (almost all DH in this direction) "Incessant Giggles". You have to get to Fell unless you set a shuttle. And F to G is rough old trail, but mostly DH this way. There will be some steepies in the section, and you may have to push up something in here. G to C is great new style flowy trail.

Thanks Bill. I was considering doing the Fell to G with the group, and then continuing on CW for a 20 mile ride, but it sounds like that section rides better CCW.

Interesting how we can all ride the same trail but prefer different directions. We usually ride that loop clockwise and love it!

A colorful (green, yellow, red) front was passing over the Greenwood area last night between 1030 and midnight - looked like it would continue for an hour or so past that. If they don't have more rain between now and tomorrow morning, the trails might be fine for tomorrow but I have sent a note to our contact up there for more information.
Right now it looks like they are predicting 50% to 60% chance of rain again this afternoon.
Please check back here later today for an update on the National Trails Day ride and picnic scheduled for tomorrow!
As we have traditionally done, if it is canceled it will be next year on National Trails Day before this event will be scheduled again!

Im a Midlands member who used to live in G wood so I am stoked to get my columbia folks down there on that trail (the ones who didn't go last year anyway). Couple of quick questions: Since there are three trail heads, I wasn't sure which you are specifying as Fell Hunt Camp (Parsons Mountain, Long Cane, Fell Hunt Camp...three names for the same system!!) I am assuming that this is the big lot where that guy lives in his camper near that big old colonial looking house? Usually is a Three dollar fee for that lot, will the fee be waived or do I need to stick $3 in my pocket? Can't wait to get out there! and my two cents on routes? My favorite from fell is from fell up the kudzu to curtail and back down to the split and back to fell........about 16 miles......super sweet downs and all the good sections and best of all, it turns the grind up the gravel into a nice relaxing roost back down to the single track and the creek.....but I like every foot of trail on this system.....it is too fun. Look forward to a great day!

Yes it is the Fell Hunt Camp adjacent to the guy with the camper! We have rented the pavilion and the USFS has waived the parking fee for us for this event! So glad you can join us. Just make sure and check back here before heading out in case we have to cancel the ride/cookout due to trail conditions! Thanks

Just heard back and it is a go! There are some sections of trail that have been churned up by the horses so those spots will be muddy (don't wear white) due to the rain early today. They know they have work to do on those because they do each season. The remainder of the trail is firm. Allow about an hour and 15 from where you cross the bridge into SC (if coming Fury's Ferry). See you there tomorrow at 10am (unless you are doing the earlier/longer ride). Looks like we have a good group of about 45 riders coming tomorrow!

Thanks to everyone for coming out! We had 42 people and plenty of ride combinations for everyone! Thanks to Dewey who stepped up as grillmaster - Dewey the brats, hotdogs and burgers were excellent. Always love riding the Long Cane Trails but more than that thoroughly enjoy socializing with such a great group of people. Thanks again to our Greenwood guys for being the hosts and for Midlands SORBA for representing. Ill post a few pics once we get home!
