I understand there is some talk about moving the race from May to september of 2010, because of the IMBA meeting in the 706.
I would vote not to move it.
Due to the success of the Augusta 1/2 Ironman. Many people will use the ironman to end their season. So they will be training for 3 sports. If you move the Sumter race, you will lose some folks that focus on the Triathlon. I would like to see the race go forward this spring as it was a great event the we can grow.
If we pick a date and stick to it each year, we can grow this race to 150 riders. And some how add part of FATS and you will have a hit with racers.

The plan is for the SMC is in October next year. Spring is just too busy, too many other mtn bike events.
And, in the spring we really need to focus on the World Summit.

The problem with adding FATS is that it is too far from Modoc. It would have to be a point to point, or be 100 miles instead of 100K. And that is a whole nuther thing from the rider and organizer side of things. There was talk of having a 100 mile option the first year, but it got nixed just for logistic reasons. Have not heard any talk of that since.
I'm happy the SMC is going on at all in 2010. IIRC, the SMC almost wasn't going to happen in 2010 because of the Summit. It was then decided to move it to October to keep it going...for many of the reasons L29 stated. No way it could be in May like last year simply because the people who actually make it go said so. I am not one of the people who make it go. I just ride in it.

a 100km mountain ride is a great tempo training day. I, being a triathlete, plan races (run/bike) as tempo workouts specifically as a part of my training. Plus.. you usually get a t-shirt out of the deal! Not that a pint glass and hat aren't justified rewards.
October would be perfect considering the climate around these parts. Cooler is better when it comes to epic length events!
