Glen K with USFS gave me the heads up that USFS will be burning FATS tomorrow. Original four loops will be closed, Tower and Big Rock are not being burned and will be open.
Glen says USFS hopes to have everything open this Saturday but it may be til Sunday.
Home page will be updated this evening.

These are my favorites too, along with Deep Step.
These trails are the ones ridden most at FATS by the folks I know.
I tend to see riders on these trails quite abit, almost always coming the other direction. I think they are ridden both ways by more riders than the other trails.
I ride Big Rock CCW always, and either way on Tower. Maybe CW just a hair more often. You have a preference up there?

I also prefer Big Rock CCW and generally CW on the Tower - exception is if we have to do a very, very abbreviated ride and then I like CCW Big Rock and then CCW on Tower just up to the Tower for a nice fast ride back down to continue Big Rock.

Big Rock is also kinda fun to ride as a figure 8. Climb up the gravel road, descend one side of the trail, then climb back up the gravel road to descend the other side.
Here's another vote for Big Rock CCW and Tower CW.

both ccw, climbing T is slightly easier cw, I think, but the downhills are way more fun ccw on both

I did a night ride several weeks ago. We did both loops CW and then both loops CCW. In my opinion, the CCW was easier and more fun.

For me the CCW DH on Big Rock are way better than the CW DH's.
Who rides over the small rock near big rock proper? It is just off to the left side of the trail and I am starting to see the formation of a line there. I ride it every time I ride Big Rock and it can't be just me riding this line.

^ I don't know but i rode Big rock for the first time today, twice, going ccw and it was a blast. Which loop of the northern two trails do you guys prefer? And when going CW on tower where do you start?

And when going CW on tower where do you start? They kinda blend into one trail for me...the way you ride half of BR, then all Tower, then the other half of BR. If I had to pick one...Tower. To go CW on Tower, you go straight across the gas line and down the hill. To go CCW, you swing hard right at the gas line and continue climbing to the Tower.

I rode today, and while down there i went and looked at the "burn" section. holy crap- it looks soo so bad. I mean every square inch of the ground, except for 12-24" of trail, is complete ash. It was very surreal looking- it was just a black, burnt landscape, but with trees. . . and a brown trail. so odd looking.
I wonder how long it will take to go back to normal? Several months ?

I would think that it will start returning to normal within a couple of weeks, especially with it being spring time. Check out the area around the boat ramp below the dam on the Georgia side, it was burned just a few months ago. When grass catches fire (on the side of the road for example), it typically grows back within 1-2 weeks, especially during the spring and summer with enough water. With the woods around FATS being as healthy as they are, you should see an explosion of growth very soon....

A few weeks and it will be turning green. It may look bad but control burns get rid of fuel build up on the forest floor. If build up was allowed when a fire started it would spread to the crowns of the tree which would kill the trees and be devastating to the communities near by.
The massive forest fires you see out west are partly human made disasters. For almost a century forest fires no matter how small were fought allowing fuel build up. Also fire is a part of forest ecology, many tree species seeds do not open unless exposed to high heat.
