Ever seen a large log across the trail and someone has built up small logs on both sides of the large log to make a pyramid?
Please don't do this. Here is what happens.
As riders go over the pyramid, eventually one of the riders will dislodge the small logs on the backside. Then the next rider over the large log is in mid air, and looking to put the front wheel down on the back side of the large log. Except, the spot where the front wheel goes is now taken up by the small log that rolled away from the large log. And over the handlebars goes the second rider.
This happened to me yesterday on Turkey Creek. I had on a helmet that was on it's second ride ever. It is now cracked. Two rides and it is now cracked. Then the guy with me tells me he built the pyramid about 6 months ago. He got an earful from me!
Please don't build pyramids of logs on trails unless the entire pyramid is secured and the smaller logs can't roll away from the larger logs.
Adding to my frustration is I know this about Pyramids. Usually I won't ride over one unless I have scoped out the landing....for loose small logs that were once part of the pyramid.

I know I shouldn't laugh....but it's hard not too. ;D Glad your helmet did it's job and you're alright. Going to try and get it replaced thru the manufacturers crash replacement program? Let us know how it goes.

Within the last few months I have seen this more and more. Similar thing happened to me (without the cracked helmet) at the Canal. since than I dismount. the one on Turkey was over a pretty large non-rider.

Going to try and get it replaced thru the manufacturers crash replacement program? Let us know how it goes. Hopefully BV has a helmet with that deal. Specialized doesn't offer that. I honestly am so ever thankful that the helmets did their job, but YetiChick busted two $200 Speccy helmets within a year. No warranty. She still wears Specialized as she likes the fit, but... MD

There are currently two logs (riders for some) that are very close together on Great Wall. Both of those logs have the configuration you have described with smaller logs pushed up against the large log. Is this done because although the log might be a rider, it isn't so much a rider to the person who puts the smaller logs in place?

MD Specialized Prevail. $230 retail. Just bot it at the SORBA silent auction in Brevard.

Is this done because although the log might be a rider, it isn't so much a rider to the person who puts the smaller logs in place? The one that worked.....was on Great Wall. It was the one with the large log and the large ROCK to make the pyramid. It worked because the rock was partially buried and couldn't move. That one is gone now as the log finally broke in half and the whole thing got moved so that it is a little "s" turn in there now. The idea is to build up both sides so the rider can "ride up" and "ride down" the pyramid instead of having to "ride over" the large log on its own. Works until the backside logs start to roll away. And unless they are pinned down somehow (like partially buring the rock), they always roll away and someone usually has a wreck because of this. I think I just unlucky in the way I hit the log and got slammed head first into the ground before I knew it.
