Rode a couple of laps of Horne today before the rain. The trail is clear and in great shape. I can't believe there is still snow after 1 week. Attachments:

have ridden Horn a few times in the past few weeks and had to clear very little off the trail. However, someone a little off kilter, has been doing a little work of their own. Many reflectors (mostly broken pieces) nailed to trees leading off into the wood, both on the trail & gravel roads. Parts of cut trees obviously moved back onto the trail (section 3) at odd angles. One of the old 4X4 trail markers painted white had been wedged between 3 trees spanning the trail at chest height (also section 3), and one of the newer carsonite signs snapped off @ grade, removed, and put onto another moved tree in the trail. I cleared all of this from the trail about 2 weeks ago, have ridden twice since, and haven't had any problems, but wanted to let everyone know to keep an eye out on your first lap around Horn Creek. So, the trail has one tree down near the beginning of section2 (CW) just after you enter the woods after the logging area.

This sounds like USFS Law Enforcement should know about this.

On the reflectors.......... I could be totally off base with this (in other words just a little story I made up in my head - but we do a lot of night riding and there have always been reflectors leading off the various trails into the woods. I always thought hunters placed them there so when they were heading off into the woods in the wee hours of the morning they could easily find the spots leading to their favorite spot! Thoughts?

YC and I hit Horn Creek today after work. Trail was in great condition. We removed a bit of trail debris, and will ride it again Saturday to ensure it is ready for the Ladies Ride on Sunday. One "non-rider", and it may or may not get removed Saturday.
Trail is perfect. Great tread.

Between to GW and DS there are small reflectors going off into the woods also.

Thoughts? Sorry I didn't catch this before, but you are correct Angela. Hunters use the reflective dots to find their favorite or assigned hunting position. MD

Horn was in great condition for riding today. YC and I showed up early to do a bit of trail maintenance, run a chainsaw, then knocked out a lap. Also enjoyed a cruise of the day-use area. Lots of improvements in that area.
Looked like a good turnout for the ladies ride.

I was happy to be riding today, but the ride was not particularly fast or fun - many trees down, mostly sections 2 & 3. All sections had some down. Some riders, some not. Too many of each. Rode 3 laps anyway.

Rode 3 laps anyway. Mainly trees or does it need to be mowed also? If it is trees, well, I have a new chainsaw that needs some exercising... If it needs a haircut also, well, SORBA/CSRA has a new DR that hasn't seen a trail yet. MD

The trees are definitely the worst thing. It could use mowing in the usual sections, but its not as bad as I have seen it. There are probably some other trails that need mowing worse, like lower/middle Wine or the back of Turkey. Of course with the Bakers Dozen posted, riders might start checking out the trail. It would be a little discouraging in its current state.

I agree. I was on Horn once this past week. I remember only 1 tree down on section 1. It is within 20 yards of the end and is the only tree canopy down on the trail. 4 equally spaced trees down on section 2 (2 non-riders you go under & 2 over). The beginning of section 3, looks like a big game of pick-up sticks - too many pines down to count, but they are all in the beginning of that section. (on my second lap I skipped this beginning section of 3, went up the gravel hill & reentered section 3 @ the new parking lot). Section 4 had one tree down midway thru down hill section just above switch back. Section 5 was clear I think.

quick question since I seldom ride Lick Forks, the trail head on section 3, is that open year round? If not can you park along the fs roads in the area or only the park/campground?

You can park on the shoulder of the gravel road b/n section 1 and 2 and not pay the parking fee, if that is what you are after.

Brian, it sounds like you are referring to the newer gravel parking lot in the middle of section 3, with the red gate. If so, that is opened when the camping area is closed for the winter. It is supposed to be closed once the campground is open for the season. There is no fee to park there. Probably the best place to park (if you're not using the campground) is the pullout area between sections 4 and 5. Basically just drive past the park's main entrance, continue on gravel for probably half a mile, then make a right on the first gravel road. Drop down the hill and there's a nice pullout area on the right, just before you cross the trail. It will easily hold 3-5 cars. MD
