First - are there any hard climbs on our local trails (gravel roads count too)? Do you have a favorite? Which one is the toughest?
I'll start.
The really tough climbs around here are at the Tower. Climbing Lost Dog and Buzzard Chute is tough (I didn't say legal, I said tough). The best legal climbs over there would be Duck Pond Road, Buzz Chute Road and Triple Nipple.
The Long Cane Horse Trail has a few nice singletrack climbs. Lost Woods is the section with some nice climbs in it.
Of the trails closer to the CSRA, I like the climb on the Turkey Ridge Loop the best. If you hit the loop CCW, it has several nice climbing turns and goes on for about a half mile. I also like climbing section 3 of Horn Creek. Yep, these are the best two for me. Third is on the HKSP Lake Loop from the Campground Intersection to the barn. I love the rooty climb in Noel's Backyard at BCSP. It's short, but technical.
I do miss the old really steep stuff at the old Tower. The Unclimbable, The Wall, Buddy's Trail, Jeremy McGrath - man those were like you went to the mtns. Also greatly missed are the last three climbs on Modoc. Like the Tower, they were wiped out by timber activity.

I like to ride Horn Creek counter-clockwise from time to time but some of my buddies don't like the long climb out of section 2 from that direction (they don't complain about the steep climb in section 4 as much as they complain about the long steady climb out of section 2).......you never think about it as a real climb until you are there and it just keeps giving and giving and giving........

How about Hate @ The Tower and gasline road(gravel) @ The Tower. Modoc had a couple of decent climbs. Haven't been there in a long time.

I called Hate the Unclimbable. Same climb. I call the whole section Hate and just the last steep pitch "Unclimbable" - which is climbable for sure.
Which one is gasoline road?

What I call gasline road is probably called something else. Start up Philpot or Pilpot Road(sp?) from Hopewell Church Rd. to Firetower Rd. Take a right onto Firetower Rd., go down about a hundred yards or so and take your first left(sharp). Ride til the end and turn around @ the cul de sac. Now you have a nice climb back to the top. Good for training! ;D

I like (the name) Gasline Rd better! I called that one Buzz Chute Road. That is a nice climb, for sure.

There is a tough climb that starts in Spartanburg at the auditorium and ends at the top of Mt. Mitchell. Toughest mtb climb around here is starting at the bottom of the hiking trail at Parsons Mtn and riding up the back side (goldmine trail) to the firetower. Of course it is not legal, so we NEVER do that. Also, we can take you on a nice ride with plenty of climbs at Isaqueena.
