It is tougher and tougher to find places to hunt as private property owners are leasing out their properties to clubs. My uncle and his family own a huge chunk of property in middle Ga, and won't even let his own family hunt because it is leased. That said, you will see more and more people hunting public land as the cost of leasing rises and clubs get more expensive.

Oct 1 in Ga? I think Oct 11 in Edgefield and McCormick counties. Wear orange. Actually muzzleloader hunting opened on Oct. 1, with the new technology a muzzleloader is as powerful as a rifle. Also- you are allowed to hunt 1 hour before sunrise and 1 hr after sunset. I don't hunt the FATS area anymore due to a run in with some disrespectful bikers but if you wear orange I know it will help!

That is very unfortunate - plenty of room for all the folks who like to use the forest as long as everyone is respectful of each other! There are bad eggs in every group - years ago someone (won't say hunters because I never saw them) used to put tacks out in the Turkey/Wine parking area just before hunting season started each year........but I would say the majority of hunters are respectful of the mountain bikers and hikers and vice versa. Best to use the orange once any type of hunting for deer commences whether it be bow and arrow, muzzle-loader, rifle - I'm just more on my game about it once rifle season opens up because in the 20 years I have lived here..... the rifle hunters I know far, far outnumber the bow and arrow and muzzle-loading hunters!

Yep, rather than try to figure out what season is when, I just wear orange Oct-Jan. A couple of years ago I was riding Bartram late one afternonn and got somewhere about the landing strip when I heard "boom, boom, boom" ahead. I just turned around and headed back to Petersburg...

Interesting that you mentioned that spot Mark because the October right after the Bartram was built we were riding across the airstrip and I spotted a hunter with a gun sitting up in a tree stand along the tree line on the west side of the airstrip. And if you night ride there you can see the tiny reflective markers that the hunters use to mark the input places to their favorite spots.............all good reminders that we share those woods.

The "landing strip" is now a wildlife food plot maintained by ACOE.
