Have any of you who have volunteered to help with the Ironman heard anything from them about where to go and what time to be there? My wife signed us up through their website (so I am not part of the SORBA delegation) but she hasn't gotten any emails or any communication about if/where we sign in or park or anything.

I sent this thread to whom I think can get you some info.
edit to add: just got a call saying Ironman owners are having volunteer communication issues. That said, look for some info coming from Augusta Sports Council today, I believe via this forum.

Bill Victor made me aware of some issues with online volunteer registration. Sorry about that. This is not handled from the Sports Council office, so we're trying to manage as we here about it. If anyone volunteered for something other than the SORBA aid station, and are still waiting for info, contact Carly at 706.722.8326 x 231 or carly@augustasportscouncil.org.
Again, sorry about the issues. While I'm here, thanks to SORBA-CSRA for jumping in to help again. And good luck with the SMC. I had hoped to compete, but alas, will be a little tied up this weekend. We appreciate all you do!

I'm surprised no one has commented. Don't know about the rest of you but I enjoyed the hell out of it, rain and all! If you have never volunteered for this event you are missing out. It is just incredible to see the sheer numbers of competitors and if you are a "people watcher" it is extra special. There are big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones, beautiful ones, ugly ones, you name it; but most of all are the ones who are physically challenged in some way.
From now on, every time I'm riding a hill and start feeling sorry for myself I will remember the guy with one leg who was pedaling a bicycle up that hill and keeping up. What a marvelous example of heart and character! People like that make me feel kind of insignificant. Then there were the ones doing that 56 miles on a hand cranked bike, and the ones doing it on a tandem (assuming the second rider was sight impaired?)... I could go on, but you get the picture. Please consider coming out next year and supporting this event.

I posted a few pics and no one has responded. I also saw others out there with cameras and was hoping that someone could add a few pictures. We didn't take that many pics...we were too busy! What a blast. We will be out there again, and again. sorbacsra.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=2090MD

I left our station, got some lunch, and went downtown and handed out gatorade to the runners.
I shoulda skipped getting lunch. I would have been fed as a volunteer.
What a scene downtown. Thousands of people milling about.
I almost have myself convinced to start swimming and running. I think I'll be ok on the bike part.
I'll be back next year. This is a great thing to volunteer for.

My wife and I were at the first water station on the run, corner of 4th and Green. I know I haven't worked that hard in 20 years, if ever. I didn't get to watch much of the action because I had my head inside a cooler filling water cups as fast as I could. I didn't even know lunch was at our station until about an hour later, wouldn't have had time to eat it anyway. I am still sore from moving ice and water around.
The athletes I did see were awe inspiring, I know for a lot of them this was their SMC/Baker's Dozen, and I admire the effort. I love to ride, and I can tolerate running, but I can't see swimming that far -- then riding -- then running. That said, my official excuse for not participating is that my wife won't let me buy a time trial bike (Cervelo seems to be the brand of choice, followed closely by Felt)
Have at it Bill, I will be there to cheer you on.

There's a another Tri event locally in the spring at Langley Pond. It's at the International distance: 1500 meter swim, 25 mile ride and 10K run. My road riding buddies want me to consider it. I could manage the run and bike but would probably drown -and the water would be really cold then. And then you gotta buy the wetsuit, cap, goggles. Forget a tri-bike, I'd use what I have. Might be interested in the 70.3 in 2011. Gotta find time to train. But frankly, I believe that this year's SMC was more difficult than the ESI 70.3. The deal maker was heat.

Dr Scott- We were at the stop, momentarily, across the street from you and I saw you running with bags of ice to fill the cooler. I would have helped but my legs might have locked up from the SMC effort the day before, sorry! I say we get SORBA to sponsor BV for next year's race, does this mean you might ride a road bike? ;D

I have thought of trying something like this. ride/swim no problem. I used to run half marathons in the Army but have not ran since 91. Would have to start that and borrow a road bike.

my hamstrings are still screaming from moving the ice and water around. I must have used about 10 of those bags of ice and I don't know how many gallons of water. My fingers are still a little yellow from the Gatorade. I think you need about 5 people per table for the fluids, and we only had three at our table.
The cleaning up wasn't so bad except for the tops to the gel packs that people had just spit out and kept on trucking. Those things are like cigarette butts to try and get up.
I agree with Dale though, I think the SMC was harder, because it wasn't hot out there for the ironman. I did most of my work with a rain jacket on and while I was sweating I wasn't dying.
I would be so scared the whole time I was on a tri-bike, scared that I would wreck it and destroy a $3000 (at least) bike. Maybe I should just put aerobars on the Cannondale 29'er and go that way.

Wonder why the swim is 75% the distance of the Half Ironman, and the run and bike are less than 50% the distance. Isn't the swim in a 70.3 Ironman 1.2 miles? Isn't 1500 meters about .93 miles? Bike is 56 miles and 25 miles. Run is 13.1 and 6.2. Swimming would be the weak link for me.

not really its down stream and wetsuit legal so everyone thinks it makes for a fast swim. Many argue that it is a tad short of the true distance as well. You got it BV!
