Rode 49 miles of the SMC route today....a route I call the 49er Route. It is the whole route, minus the mostly paved 14 miles from Lick Fork to Modoc.
We started at Modoc and rode to Key Bridge. We flagged some of the SMC route with pink/orange ribbons. Modoc was in great shape with one unridable tree down. The clearing going up the hill at the end has seen the blade and was wide and hard packed. We will need to check the flags in this area, and be prepared to re-flag it not long before the first racers go thru. I wouldn't be surprised if the flags get pulled down in there.
Turkey Creek was in good shape...and needs wheels. We stopped for a second at Key Bridge and filled up with water. Headed out on Wine. Wine is just great. We had another cooler just off Key Rd on a gravel rd that takes you to Lick Fork. This was mile 33 and we should have left the food here instead of at mile 22.
The gravel from Key Rd to Martintown Rd wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. We got to the truck, got more water and then rode a lap of Horn Creek to wrap up the 49er. Horn Creek is in rough shape. In some of the wide open spots, there is grass growing in the tread.
This is a great route. The shuttle and sags can be set pretty easily. We met at Sportsman's at 8am. Drove 2 cars straight to Key Rd and dropped both coolers. Then drove both cars to intersection of 1 and 2 on Horn Creek Trail. Left one truck. Drove other car with all 3 bikes and riders to Modoc, and started riding. Rode to other car, drove back to Key Rd and got the coolers and on to Modoc to get my car. Not too bad, really. I did the ride with water bottles. Started with 3 and at mile 22, left with only 2. We had water at miles 22,33,43.5 and the end.
It was just under 6 hours total time. We didn't stop much, but did flag the course in many places and that slowed us down. I recommend this route if you are looking to do something big. The route seems a little easier this direction. We'll find out for sure in two weeks.
