Wasn't actually at FATS, I was climbing hills on the fire road coming off of wood lawn rd but wanted to share. The snake was huge, nearly covering the entire road from side to side, 5 or 6 ft long. I almost ran it over, swerved around the tail end and came to a stop about ten ft away. It just lifted its head to take a look at me, a flat broad head maybe 4-5 inches across, and then continued its trip across the road. Man when it looked at me I nearly shit. I didn't think rattlers got that big, first time I ever saw one in the wild. Awesome

They're all over the FATS area, there were a ton of sightings last year.
It's a good idea to look around before you stop and put your foot down.

it must have been hurt. Ive never got that close to a rattlesnake without hearing that rattle. Nah, they don't rattle unless they feel threatened. 99% chance it was a Canebrake, which is pretty docile anyway. You really have to poke them to get a reaction.

Well I think your right after googling away and a little reading and some pictures I think It was a canebrake rattle snake. Apparently much more docile than other species in the rattle family but still packs some nasty venom. i was mostly impressed by the size of its head. Also saw an Armadillo run down the trail in front of me at fats about a week ago. Another cool wild life encounter.

A rattler that large would have me quaking. The last one I saw was close to four feet, but not nearly the monster you saw. I don't feel the need to kill them like I was "taught" as a kid. I just let them have their space now. Glad you did the same...

I either passed a baby playing with a rattle or something else on GW yesterday (8/24) Did not bother to stop and look around.
My feeling is it's their home, we are just visitors to it.

I know you guys are sounding off just for grins (at least, I hope so); but let's not leave the casual reader with the impression that a good snake is a dead snake. These creatures play a critical role in balancing our ecology. Would you rather have rats everywhere or a handful of rattlesnakes in the wilderness that have a miniscule chance of hurting anyone?

Don't understand the mentality of killing something that is in it's habitat that does way more good than harm.

If you guys knew "Odd Couple" or at least the "Odd" part of the couple, you know he's both serious and getting a rise out of people just for chuckles. So it might be best, just like dealing with a snake, to let him posture and make his noise, and ignore it then keep moving. He's probably more scared of you than you are of him. ;D

In no way do I condone someone killing a snake (or any animal) just because they're scared of it, or just for fun. But I don't care which one of us was in the woods first, if there's a rattler coiled and ready to strike and I have no means of retreat, then I'm gonna do what I can to make sure he ends up on the losing end of the deal. Besides, rattlesnake is some good eatin'. Tastes like alligator. Hey, I didn't join PETA for nuthin'. PETA (People Eatin' Tasty Animals) www.tastyanimals.us/
