Been riding FATS about a year now, and just had my first off this morning. Got there about 10am, only vehicle in the lot. Rode Deepstep CCW, Skinny CW to Brown Wave CCW, then back onto Skinny to complete the CW loop. About 500ft from the southern tip of Skinny, on a nice downhill section, I came across a new tree fallen across the trail. It was masked by a plant at a slight bend in the trail. I was carrying too much speed to stop. Rear brake locked and still moving very quickly, I pulled on the front and went over the bars. Not sure if the bike actually hit the tree or not, but there was no damage. I did not hit the tree, because I cleared it as I separated from the bike. Landed very heavily on my right side. Momentum of my head smacked it into the trail, hard. I have some deep bruising to my shoulder, and also the outside of my arm near the elbow, and a few scratches on my right leg. The main reason I am posting this is because I am sure the helmet saved me from very serious injury. My head hit the ground hard. real hard. I can still hear the sound. There were a few roots there and they caused dents in the styrofoam. After a few minutes to recover, I muscled the tree out of the trail. The shoulder is starting to stiffen up already, but I feel fortunate. So, my lessons for the day. Trails can change from one day to the next, and helmets save lives.

Thanks for the story. Glad you're okay, relatively speaking. I've went down at FATS before also because the trail had changed a little since I last rode it. I ended up with some minor scrapes and a few bruised ribs. Not fun. Get yourself a new helmet. Helmets are only designed to take one hard impact. It took a lot of force to deform the styrofoam. Next time, the styrofoam wont be able to absorb that energy, so it'll go to your head instead. Most companies have crash replacement programs, so you wont have to pay full retail. Let us know how that works if you go that route.

Good info to know on the helmets. I went down and whacked mine pretty hard a while back and never even looked at it. I will check it out.

If it was a hard whack and there's even a hint of doubt, get a new one. The damage may not be visible. I've had to replace a helmet through Bell's replacement program due to it shattering on impact. I was told by them at the time that even if the helmet was dropped from waist high that they recommend replacement. Not sure if that was 100% true, or maybe a little marketing involved, but the fact that they were not sellling me anything (I needed a helmet for sure as mine at totally smashed) has me leaning more towards it being truthful. Sure wouldn't want to find out the hard way. I've already gone that route with a known good one, and it wasn't fun. Better safe than sorry.

Actually, the helmet went with the bike I loaned/gave to my son. Looks like he is in store for a new helmet.
