What are the Modoc trails like?
I'm visiting for the holiday and would like to get a ride in somewhere other than FATS.

Modoc is a ~7 mile out and back old school trail. It's the most technical trail in the CSRA. Some sections are really fast. It's not as rooty as some trails in the area, but more than FATS for sure. Modoc's main feature is the multiple creek/ditch crossings, some are easy to ride, others are very difficult. With all the rain we've had recently they've probably all got water in them right now too. A few pics here: sorbacsra.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pictures&action=display&thread=1321

What about elevation - is there lots of climbing? Is it well marked?
I love creek crossings - the pictures and video were cool.

The elevation isn't too crazy, pretty typical for a trail around here, though some of the climbing is a little steeper, but not very long. The trail is well marked. There are two intersections to watchout for:
Bridge to no where - it's right after a very tight switchback, and will be on your left as you ride away from the parking lot. Don't cross the bridge, follow the trail.
Access trail - there will be a white post with an "A" and an arrow. This trail goes to a forest service road. No need to ride it unless you're curious.
The trail "officially" ends when you reach the T intersection with a post with paint on it...I can't remember if it's white or blue paint, but it's the only post with paint on it. However, if you turn to the left and follow the posts with arrows you'll get a nice long gradual climb out to a FS road. When you reach the gravel road, turn around and bomb back down the hill to the trail.
Feel free to join us if you want a more technical and challenging ride. But if you're looking for a leisurely ride I'd recommend Bartram. Yeti Chick will make a good guide!

Kona is an accomplished rider and will make a great addition to your expedition Dustin. She can already handle anything at FATS so Modoc should be a nice change of scenery.
Remember to bring your orange Melissa.
Be safe!

Thanks for the information - sounds like a trail i will definitely want to get to soon, just don't know if it will be this weekend. I bought an orange vest last year for when i was down there but it ended up raining and i didn't use it and now it's in storage (I think). But I did bring two orange jerseys with me so hopefully those will work. Dustin - I'll post up if we can make it. John - hope to see you on the trails again soon.
