We rode HC today. Wore our orange for sure. Must have been a half dozen trucks parked beside the roads heading there, and several campers with the obvious "I am a hunter" markings.
Section one was nice, very nice.
Section two was, well, rough. The first half mile or so that were clear-cut are now so overgrown that the trail is nearly non-existent.
Section three was very nice. One tree down.
Section four was depressing. Straight depressing. This used to be a blast. Now, the first mile or so that has been clearcut is missing. Yep, missing. The tree canopy used to keep the ground cover at bay, but it is absolutely out of control. We can mow this fall, and will need to mow at least twice a year to keep this section (and the beginning of two) rideable.
Section five was awesome.
This trail, like the others, just needs riders and a few people to show it some love....
Horn Creek has been first on my list for exercising by myself for many years. Offering many loops from the short sections of trail which can be mixed & matched, always near the parking areas. It has trail side streams, varied terrain, and well is the closest to home. The trail has always needed maintenance, as all trails do, but now, with the new direction the FS is taking with the forest, things have changed. Within the last month I've ridden Modoc, Turkey, Wine, & HC, and of all HC's tread is in the worst shape. Downfalls and overgrowth are one thing, but with the canopy removal in sections of sections 2 & 4, the vegetation is taking the tread. With the cooler weather and plant growth slowing it's time for some work.
I'd like to get a work party set for the Saturday morning of Nov. 21st. We will only need to work on the two problem sections and with them under control, Horn Creek can be great again.
Nice work! Got my first ride after the work party, Sunday morning 11/29, and the trail is in good shape. The switchback handled the first hard rain w/o any washout. I had to ride it a few times in both directions, trying out various lines, and I think its a good fix for the rain & rider. There are 2 new pines down, one is in the middle of section 2.
