Just moved here from Alabama and have ridden a few of the trails in multiple directions and was just wondering what would be considered an average time for some of the trails. I rode GW CCW today and then after a 15-20 min break I rode Skinny CCW and timed myself. It took me 41 min from the map at the trailhead and back to the map. That is the first time I have ridden that trail CCW and it seemed faster than CW but it was almost dusk when I rode it CW so I may have been beig more careful. I think it took me somewhere in the 40 min range for Deep Step going CW and I forgot to time any of the other variations.
anyway just curious so post up your time if you care to share. Thanks Chad

I use to keep a log.... I don't remember many of my times. I do remember I've done Deep Step in about ~25 mins, and Skinny + Brown Wave in about 1hr 15mins. Both of those times are from starting and ending in the parking lot.

Wow, DS in about 25 min is absolutely smoking. I can't imagine being that fast. Maybe if I got rid of the platforms and got some gloves I could shave a few minutes off but wow...thanks for giving me something to work towards. Which direction were you riding DS to get that time?

Chad, glad you are enjoying FATS. I do want to point out that there are numerous other single track in the CSRA. I would recommend that you try them all out. Each is a bit different. A good way to check them out in the "Explore the Trails" Next one is at Modoc on 8/2/09 @ 9:30am.

Somewhere, deep in the depths of this forum, should be the time trail results from FATS of a few years ago.
I think we did three. All started and ended in the parking lot. I think the routes were: Skinny CW, GW CCW and, Brown Wave CCW w/ Upper Skinny lollipop stick.

Did a search for time trials at FATS and saw a thread from a couple years ago talking about it and a few people mentioned interest and posted some of their times but couldn't find any official results.
No biggie, I am really just competing against myself anyway. Went back today and even after being a tad bit sore from yesterday I was able to knock off 3 min and got down to 38 min from the map doing Skinny CCW and back to the map.

The time trial results were posted on the front page of the website, not in the forum. Not sure if the front page stuff gets archived? I did all 3 time trials and here are the times I had in my notebook (not necessarily official, but should be very close): Skinny CW: 34:48 (including a wrong turn on to the Brown Wave connector. Probably lost about a minute on that one). Great Wall CCW: 42:30. I dont have a time recorded for Brown Wave CCW, I think it started to rain and some of us stopped on course to discuss whether to continue or abort, or something like that. The start/finish point was at the trailhead right next to the Kiosk. For reference, my times were roughly 5 minutes slower than the winner's time for each trial.

Wow... talk about demoralizing! Seeing some of those times really hurts the ego a tad. I rode yesterday and rode Skinny CW in 40 minutes and 20 sec felt good about it seeing as how late last year I was in the mid 50's stopping a couple times. How many of those 30 minutes time guy weigh 270+lbs? ;D

How many of those 30 minutes time guy weigh 270+lbs? ;D Never quite weighed 270, but I was touching 255 last fall and decided that enough was enough. Now down to 220. I am not a twenty-something (age) rider weighing 160, but I can clean DS in the very low 30s right now. Two nights ago it was 30:50. I was stoked. Waiting on a 29er FS this fall. Will it be the '10 Stumpy or the '10 RM Altititude... MD

I guess if I rode more than twice a month I could get better eh?

MD brings up a good point...I wonder how much the bike comes into play on the types of trails at FATS. I know there are several times where if I get going too fast I can't keep my hardtail on the ground over some of the whoops. Nothing wrong with that when I am wanting to catch some air and have fun, but it can't be the fastest way through those sections... Anyone want to let me borrow their FS for a comparison?

Your post just made me feel MUCH better ;D I did Skinny today at about 45 minutes with a stop to offer help to a few riders in need and a pause for an oncoming uphill rider. Total time was about 50 minutes from parking lot and back (with the stops included). And yeah I am no lightweight LOL. Working on that by riding as much as possible lately though so maybe those times will come down. And I agree about that with a hardtail you have to watch it or you will fly if you do not want to on the whoops. But that pretty fun too to get a litte air....and I mean a little lol Tom

A friend of mine was down a few years ago and didn't bring a bike. I let him borrow my SS. He then rode the 4 old school loops at FATS 10 minutes faster than he ever had before. It was his first time on this bike, the first time on a SS. He's fast to start with. But couldn't believe how fast FATS is on a SS.

Suspension wont keep the bike on the ground through the whoops. Suspension keeps the tires on the ground over small bumps, so you have traction for little things like braking, turning, accelerating, etc. You gotta use body english to keep the tires on the ground in the whoops. Try and keep your body at the same elevation through a few whoops. Use your arms and legs to push the bike down into the whoop, then "suck" it up as you go out the other side. You don't want to pull it up off the ground, you just don't want the bike to push YOU into the air. There is however, a critical speed, where you go too fast to ride them. You'll fly off one into the face of the next one...not good. So you either slow down, or man up and jump them like a double. I slow down.

I'm with you there D (slowing down). I have learned that keeping the tires on the ground I can go faster, and avoid a lot of pain. I tried to jump the double at the "dip" on the brown wave, with my family doctor watching. On purpose. All I remember is sky, dirt, sky, dirt. I got up wobbly sayin' "I'm alright, I'm alright". Didn't break anything (how I have no idea).Well after 8 hours of my wife reaming me a new one, I figured I had better give up jumping.

Haha, a friend and I tried jumping that too, the step up coming out of the dip w/the sign in front of it. I cased it a bit, and rode down the backside of the whoop on just the front tire. Somehow, I didn't crash. My friend did the same thing, but went over the bars. Broke his helmet, got some road rash on his face, and was generally bruised up. Could have been much worse, when he hit the ground I figured I'd be calling 911 for them to come get him. He landed funny on his arm, and he hit HARD. 3 days later he was a best man in a wedding lol

I had a nice 36 minute lap from the trailhead parking lot and back on the Great Wall. My Deep Step lap is about 30 minutes...maybe a few minutes quicker since I timed it from the car and back again. Only on the weekdays though .. That's at 140lbs on a hard tail.
