Great thread. I am 52. My resting heart rate is 50. I do three spin classes per week. Each class is a 1 hour speed workout. Initially, I would average in the 140's. I now average in the 160's. My max has not changed - it is still about 180. One of the instructors confirmed that this was expected - with improved fitness you are able to sustain a heart rate closer to your max.
I do get occassional spikes up over 210 (accompanied by a quesy feeling). I go easy for 1-2 minutes until the rate comes back down.

Not advocating one place or another but Gold's has spin classes and spin bikes. The one in Aiken does, but i have not checked out the N.A. gym. Same owners for both so i'm sure they are similar.

I know the Family Y on Wheeler Rd has spin classes also. Haven't been (WAY to early in the morning), but I know they have them.

the golds class was in the evening here in aiken, SPD-SL/LOOK pedals and all with straps for the non-clipless folks who weren't spin savvy. I'd be willing to meet some folks at any of the locations mentioned and spin with them since i'm a part time roadie with ironman aspirations.

I spin at Gold's in Aiken. There are a bunch of classes, both morning and evening plus Saturday AM. I go Monday at 1730 with Amy, Thursday at 1730 with Kim and Saturday at 0815 with rotating instructors. The folks attending are a mixture of non riders, rec riders and a few former racers.

Would it be possible for you guys to post this subject in the skills/training section seeing as it's getting pretty long? sorbacsra.proboards23.com/index.cgi?board=SkillsclinicIt's a great subject but has nothing to do with bricks @ FATS unless your ride carrying some of these bricks. I also see potential for more comments on this subject in the future. I rode yesterday for I don't know how long with a heart rate of I don't know how high with an average speed of I don't know how fast for a mileage total of I don't know how far with a lactate threshold of I don't know. I do know what my suspension settings were and how much beer I needed to expel from the SORBA meeting the night before. Sorry guys, not poking fun. I do hold an interest in this subject. Apparently someone replaced my Alphabits with some smart-ass-e-o's today. By the way, the bricks look GREAT. Much better than all the drains.

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing...I don't have the rights to move the thread though, a moderator will have to do that.
