Any suggestions for a basic cycling computer? I have a Vetta for my road bike. It uses tie wraps to mount the computer to the bars and the sensor to the fork. Not sure how well this would work on the trail.
Are certain models better for trails due to the pounding?
Are there other mounting methods?
Thanks.

I can tell you that I bought a similar set-up made by Polar and it doesn't work worth &%$*!! The heart rate portion of it is fine because it transmits from a chest strap; but the speed/distance sensor never has worked. It seems that the distance between the spokes and the fork bar is too far for the correct clearance of the magnet and pick-up. I can twist both to where they have the clearance, but then they pass on an angle rather than parallel.
This is a good example of where I was penny wise and pound foolish. Had I taken it to one of the local shops they could have given me good advice on a model and installed it for me. If it doesn't work then they stand behind it.

You actually want zip ties to fasten it as there aren't many options that actually work. Mostly rubber o-ring type fastening systems that will eventually dry out and break. Stay away from Sigma for MTB. I've sold lots of, and had great luck with, Cateye Enduro computers over the years due to the reliability and heavy duty wire. I also like any Planet Bike computer. All are durable and easy to use and not very expensive. These aren't the only choices, just the ones that I have used.

If you still have the polar you can "build up" the sensor off of the fork to get it closer to the magnet. But I probably don't need to tell you that.

Ted, the problem is the sensor is designed to mount to the front of the fork, or so the instructions indicated. All I can do is rotate it towards the spokes which makes the magnet pass it on an angle.
