I went running this evening at the Bartram trail and was surprised to see that the "big" bridge has been swept away by flowing water! This is the bridge closest to the Petersburg trailhead, the wider of the 2 bridges. The bridge structure looks to be pretty much intact but it is going to take a fairly large group of people to lift/drag it back into position and anchor it in place. I live pretty close to the trail and I cannot recall when it has rained hard enough to do this much damage... weird!

We rode that trail not long ago and I do not think we have had sufficient rain to displace that bridge. It has been through some pretty torrential downpours with no movement at all over the past few years. Any chance its movement was an assisted move??

No, I really think the water did it. The surrounding area is all washed out and there is a big pile of debris that looks like it rode the water flow downhill until it lodged against the bridge and other debris. The trail surface is even rinsed clean of pinestraw and leaves coming down the hill to the bridge. Must have been one hell of a downpour.

You are 100% correct! We went out to survey the area tonight and I'll admit I was astounded. That trail has taken a beating at several points over the last few years from storms and areas eroded and washed as a result but that bridge remained steadfast.
The trail itself had really no damage - even the area leading down to that bridge that has had some serious erosion after rainstorms in the past was beautifully smooth and untouched. The rest of the trail had some sand deposits here and there but it really looked as if someone had gone through with a blower on most of the trail.
It was amazing looking at the force of water coming down through there, at the second bridge which is really pretty high up from the creek bed it was apparent the water and debris crested well over the top of that bridge as well.
Would love to have been out there to see that!!
