Don’t forget this meeting will serve as the RTP Grant mandatory public meeting for the purposes of applying for a 2006 RTP Grant that will partner SORBA-CSRA, the USFS and Long Cane Trails, LLC to once again to fund construction of the final phase of the Forks Area Trail System (FATS). Please come to this meeting to show your support for the proposed project. There will be maps at the meeting and folks there to answer any questions you might have.
UPCOMING FATS WORKPARTIES!!! The final FATS work party before the big IMBA/SORBA weekend on March 25 & 26 will be on Sunday, March 19th meeting at 9:00am at the intersection of FS662 & 662A – email Ray Shively if you can work rshivley@sorbacsra.org
PROPROSED SALE OF USFS LAND!! Please take a few minutes to go on the USFS site to view information about the proposal to sell off tracts of USFS land in order to fund rural schools. Go to the USFS site www.fs.fed.us/ see section called spotlight and click on more at the end of the title to get the details. I choose to direct folks to the USFS site so you get the basic details there is a lot of information on the web about this proposal. I believe we have until the end of March to make any comments about the proposed sale. Remember even if your favorite trail is not in peril you should weigh in to protect our forest resources if you feel the proposal will have a negative impact.
SORBA-IMBA Trail Weekend – March 25 & 26th – this is a mega event bringing mountain bikers and community leaders to the FATS trail for an all out weekend of fun, trail building and riding and to celebrate the grand opening of the FATS trail! This event was a big topic of discussion at Saturday’s SORBA Board of Director’s meeting so be sure and go to sorbacsra.org/ scroll down to the register link (in blue) and register for this event. We had a chance to see the IMBA Trail Solutions book that will be given to all registered volunteers for this event (you must come and actually work registering alone won’t do it) (it is a great book and a $30 value!!!) it is great and that alone will be worth your time commitment. The barbeque dinner (free to all registered volunteers) afterward and the chance to socialize with a lot of committed mountain bikers from several states will be priceless!!!!
Baker’s Dozen – Go to the link in the www.sorbacsra.org website for up-to-date details on the Baker’s Dozen but please note that we already have had 124 riders registered for this event and the folks at the meeting yesterday were very excited and heading back to their chapters to warn them of how close we are to the cap already – don’t delay if you are planning to participate. Everything you need to know is on the sorbacsra.org website.
April Explore the Trail Series Ride– This ride will be held on Saturday, April 1st at 1:00 at Baker’s Creek – more details to follow.
Trail News – The trails are generally in good shape and with the foliage off the deciduous trees, the views from many of the trails are at their prime right now particularly the ones near water! Since we put this out generally the first week of the month feel free to provide updates if you ride various trails!
Turkey Creek – Great condition, one large, large tree down between the 5 mile mark and the end of the trail.
FATS – Not an open trail, a work in progress, please do not ride this trail!!
Wine Creek- Good condition but there are quite a few nuisance trees down particularly in the 2nd reroute.
Horn Creek/Lick Fork - Great condition!!!
Hickory Knob – Hickory Knob a tree down on Lake Loop – still has some juicy areas.
Canal Off-Road – The trail is in good condition but there is a large tree down near the red brick road area of the trail.
Modoc – There are some trees down but the trail is in great condition to ride.
Long Cane – Last report the trail was closed due to wetness and horses but they anticipated it opening back up fairly quickly. Be sure and get an update on this trail before traveling any distance to ride it.
Baker Creek – Good condition.
Bartram (Wildwood) - No recent report
Keg Creek – All the down trees are off the trail (as far as I know) and the Dickey Branch reroute is nearly complete. Trail is in very good condition.
Bartram Trail (Lake) – Great condition – one tree down between Petersburg & Lake Springs – odd angle.
Issaqueena - Reports of non-rideable trees down on the Double Logging Road Loop……apart from that, everything in Issaqueena is open, clean, and rideable.
ORA Trail - ORA is in very good condition, except for some equestrian activity between "Good Golly Gulch and Clown Corner" it looks like some one was riding Clydesdales
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION –
Thanks to all the volunteers who continue to show up to build the FATS. This has been a very aggressive effort and the outpouring of support and participation has been greatly appreciated. If you haven’t already been out, come be a part of a monumental event – breaking new ground on a trail that is sure to be a star destination for mountain bikers all over the southeast and further once it is open.
