FATS UPDATE!!!
The Long Cane Trails and IMBA Trail Solutions team worked steadily from Sept 7 to Sept 30 and put 3.1 miles on the ground. The volunteer effort (aprox. 380 hours) has been equally strong, clearing the corridor for the Sweco Dozer to move more efficiently through the dense woods (picture a tree farm in various stages of maturity). The first loop, originally estimated by low tech GPS software to be 4.5 miles now is shaping up to be a minimum of 5 miles. The 3.1 miles on the ground need one more volunteer day to snip the roots out of the tread and clean out a few drains. This will be Sunday, October 16th. On October 9th, 14 volunteers worked on finding the almost 3 year old pin flags and "tight flagged" 70% of the next loop to be built.
As the Long Cane Trails official "flow checker", I can say the trail rides somewhat like the HKSP Lakeview Loop. It has the dips and whoop-de-doos, but these are on much longer, steeper and deeper hills and valleys. The crew is well honed on adding features to the trail for your riding pleasure. Bermed turns, accented drains with jumping potential on longer hills make for a downhill ride more like surfing than any other trail around here. It feels less like surfing and more like mountain climbing going the other way! Well, maybe a climbing wall, not a mountain.
It is probably a blessing that we are starting this project in 2005 and not 1998 when we almost got the approvals from the USFS. The crew has learned so much about building trails in that time that the wait will be worth it. Also, back then we thought 8-10 miles would have been great. But the USFS wanted something bigger and if we do build all the FATS eventually, I no longer believe the 6 loops are 32 miles. I believe they will be 36-42 miles.
Will the next phase ever start? That depends on the willingness of people to volunteer and our ability to obtain funding.
When will it open to the public? The USFS says when all 17 miles are done, inspected and approved.
