FATS got about a half an inch of rain between 8 and 9 this morning. It has been very dry so trails should be good to go later today!

FATS is too wet to ride. This system started around 3am and is just getting ready to roll out of here. It appears we avoided an erosive deluge w about another 1/2 inch added. FATS will probably need 48 hours to dry out but more rain is headed our way. Stay tuned for updates!

Trails are too wet to use right now. Trails were still damp from two previous episodes of rain in the past week when a large system rolled through starting about 5pm Nov 29 and ended about 5am Nov 30. It has brought a cold front with it so things will dry out more slowly. FATS will need the longest dry out period. Stay tuned for updates!

Trail check at FATS> tread is firm and it is drying out nicely. Trails should be good to go for trail use!
There will be the usual mucky spots, please stay on the trail to avoid widening! Keep the single track single.
If you don’t like the mucky spots remember that each day that passes without rain those areas will get fewer and fewer.

Two waves of rain rolled over the area. The 1st delivered minimal rain the second produced about half an inch. Give FATS at least 24 hours to dry out from that rain. Plenty of other trails to ride tomorrow and they are all in good condition. sorbacsra.org/Trails/Trails.htm

FATS picked up another quarter inch of rain overnight. The remainder of the week is projected to be warming up and dry so trail conditions will continue to improve day by day.

Despite the winter storm that blew threw in three waves it looks like FATS only got about an inch of rain this week. Trail users need to stay off the trails until they can dry out some, at least 48 hours but possibly more, we’ll give an update on Friday.
The good thing about an inch of rain that is not a torrential downpour is you don’t have as much erosion. It does however soak into the trail more rather than quickly run off as it does in the downpours.
Help spread the word so the USFS doesn’t feel forced to close the trail to avoid damage.

(Dec 18 noon) FATS still has some long seeps but should be okay to ride in 24 hours. There will still be the usual mucky spots. Other area trails should be good to go.

Please stay off FATS for at least 48 hours (we will give updates). Another system rolled through but we actually got lucky. What was headed our way would have produced more rain, we were lucky since what arrived delivered less rain.
We did pick up another 1/2 inch of rain to the aquifers that were causing the seeps and causing mucky areas at FATS.

Trail is okay to use. There are still some active seeps and mucky areas but the majority of the trail tread is good, there is more rain heading our way for Christmas Eve.

(Dec 24 11:59pm) FATS is under official temporary closure by the US Forest Service due to wet trail conditions. The system that rolled over lasted app 10 hours and dumped close to an inch and a half of rain. The trail system is closed to all trail users. Please do not use the trail until the trail has been reopened. Spread the word and help protect this valuable resource! Thank you!

Come on trail users we (SORBAcsra volunteers) work hard in partnership with the US Forest Service to help maintain and protect the trails you love to ride, run and hike. When the trails are temporarily closed, please respect that closure. You can be ticketed by the enforcement arm of the US Forest Service for illegally accessing the trail. I’ll post more on that later.
We requested permission from the US Forest Service today to access the trail to check on trail conditions. We were granted permission and went out to check at around 4pm today (Sunday, December 27th). There were 14 vehicles parked at various spots around the FATS. If these users were accessing the trail illegally and somehow didn’t know, please help spread the word. There is about another 100 miles of trail that were open for use.
The FATS will be reopened at noontime on Monday, December 28th. There are still active seeps and mucky areas please stay on the trail and avoid widening the tread. Keep the singletrack single!
Many thanks to all the riders, runners and hikers who did respect the closure and used one of the other local trails that were not closed.

FATS is officially back open per the US Forest Service!
Again there will be seeps and mucky spots so please stay in the middle of the trail to prevent widening. The work done this winter on the tread will help improve some of the areas. Other areas will need more extensive work.

The system that rolled through New Year’s Eve dropped another 1/2 of rain in our area. FATS was only at just the okay level without this additional rain. Please stay off FATS for a minimum of 48 hours AFTER the rain stops (looks like more is predicted later today). Thank you!
Good news is looks like we’ll avoid the worst of that winter storm that was brewing over in Texas as it has veered north.
