Just got back into riding and have been using a Panaracer Dart (from the 80's!) Anyway, the side lugs are ripping off and I need a new light front tire that will will work good for our trails. Any recommendations? What are you using?
Thanks! TerryG

Terry, It's tough to recomend tires, they're like saddles in that what I like may or may not work for you. My first thought is, if you like the Dart, then just buy a new one. There are several web based retailers who have them in stock for around $25. You asked for a "light" tire. Based on that, I'm assuming that light weight is your primary criteria for choosing a tire. In the light category, I've run the Panaracer Fire XC Pro 1.8 and Michelin Comp S tires. Like most all light tires, you give up a bit of traction to get lower rolling resistance. The Hutchison Python is another good choice in the light class of tire that I see a good many of. Though I hate to say I've given up completely on the idea of having light weight and good traction, I've gone back to riding a full knobby tire. I have a set of WTB Velociraptors on my bike now. They are heavier than the what I've ridden for the past couple of years, but they have a lot more traction. This is most noticable while cornering. Of course, I'm still looking for a lighter tire that will give me the increased traction I want and still be lighter than 600grams...

Hutcheson Python for low rolling resistance. Not a great tire in the mud, nor when the pine straw is really thick. Rolls fast though. I use one of these most of the time around here.
If rolling resistance don't matter, it's tought to beat a WTB Velociraptor.
Nothing wrong w/ another Dart.
Get kevlar beaded tires.

I put the Panaracer Fire XC Pro tires on my bike last month and love them so far. The kevlar beads make for a lightweight tire and the red sidewalls look cool. You can improve the traction a bit by going with a little less air pressure, but don't over do it or you'll invite a pinch flat. Good tires though.

Yep, I'm thinking I might give these a try on the front. I like a really aggressive side on the front tire as I tend to like to carve those turns. The Velociratpr seems highly recommended also. whats the weight of those (I guess I can look it up) As for pine straw as somebody mentioned above, when it's really thick, I don't think the tire is going to matter a lot. I laid it down at Horn Creek back in January due to Pine Straw, the bike just lost traction completely on both front and back.

Greetings all, WTB Velociraptor 2.10 Front or Rear Race 625g. WTB Velociraptor 2.10 Front or Rear Comp 660g. Panaracer Fire XC 2.10 Kevlar bead 580g. Panaracer Fire XC 2.10 Wire bead 690g. I've been using a Hutchinson Scorpion UST tire. I love these tires. They make for some good all- around tires. Plus, they make a cool sound when ridden on an asphalt or hardpack section of trail (I know, I'm easily amused)!
