The area reminds me of Horn Creek sections 2 and 4. Hopefully we can regain the awesome trail we have had for years. It appears the logging company gave absolutely, 100%, and again, zero, concern to the use of that area as a resource of recreation for cycling, walking, and running.

Bartram? If so, this is the first part of a trailhead improvement project that we helped the Corps get funded.

Yes, I am discussing Bartram. I thought that was obvious. It seems as though the logging company has left no evidence of a trail.

If you are unhappy about the tree clearing and thinning necessary to expand the Petersburg trailhead parking lot, build a picnic pavilion, bring in electricity and running water, a bike repair station, a changing room, a bike wash station, and a donation box, I suggest you go to the Army Corps of Engineers Office and share your concerns.

I share MD concerns, I looks like the logging company may have been a little over zealous and left little buffer between the trail and the parking lot. it is what it is now, I just hope riders don't cut the trail leaving and returning to the parking lot.

Unfortunately, people were already doing that - the cut through from the southeast side of the parking lot was well traveled. The trailhead improvement plans call for a split rail fence to surround the parking area.

I'm sure that in the end there is a good chance it will be fine, later nobody will remember the first few hundred yards from the old parking lot. I'm sorry but I remember what use to be the last part of Modoc and now it's gone due to clear cut. Yes, I know I'm comparing apples to oranges as far as land owners. When I see a good part of the trail INSIDE the clear cut it's going to bother me a little. so that's my opinion, I look forward to enjoying the change.

I talked to the land manager and told them I thought more trees were going to be remaining after the cut. Their response was that 1) they needed to remove trees for the expansion, 2) remove trees so as to protect the new picnic shelter 3) remove any trees that were determined to be damaged and may fall and 4) remove trees so not to have to thin the area for a long time. What we have is what we have. Yes, it currently looks bad, just like Horn Creek, but, just Horn Creek, it will look better in the coming years.
Yes, the trail going East out of Petersburg has been lost due to the logging operation. I am meeting the land manager tomorrow (June 13) at 9:30am at Petersburg to reestablish the trail location. I do expect everybody on this forum and anybody else that wants to help to meet me at Petersburg tomorrow.
You also can voice your concerns to the land manager tomorrow. Please help SORBAcsra help YOU.
This is your invitation to get involved on the front end of a large project. Come to the monthly meetings, read the monthly newsletters and provide input! This project is moving forward with you or without you. Please Come Help Me!!!!!!!! If you don’t want to help, that is ok. By the end of this year, this project will be complete and YOU and go enjoy all the new amenities at Petersburg. You Are Welcome!!!!!! Paul

6/13/15 – Progress Report: Trail coming out of Petersburg going East is unidentifiable due to logging operation debris. Using gps, blazing on trees and finding undisturbed sections of the trail, was able to mark the entire trail for cleanup. Land manager will perform cleanup of trail. Once trail is clean, the land manager will reopen the trail. Expected date is June 20, 2015.
Discussed layout of trail amenities with land manager. A new amenity that will be installed are hammock posts.
Over the next few weeks the tree stumps will be removed and fill dirt will be added. Expected competition date is July 11, 2015.
Petersburg trailhead will be open for parking on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It will be closed Monday – Thursday.

I was up there Saturday and what I gathered was that the trail will be basically will be the same after the clean up with little if any trail loss. The new trail head will be a great addition to area with changing rooms, shelter, bike washing area, grilling/picnic area, and possible skills area.
There has been numerous times in the last year or so that the Burg lot has been full with riders, hikers, and trail runners with people parking in the overflow area. Also it will give the opportunity for demo days at Bartram. It may look ugly now but IMO will be very nice when completed.

Progress Report 6/27/2015 Bartram Trail is reopened near Petersburg Trailhead; trailhead open Friday/Saturday/Sundays. Timber harvest log/debris has been cleared from Bartram Trail from Petersburg Trailhead toward the pond. The stakes with pink flagging were moved to the right of trail. Also the flagging/trail "detour" signs were removed. SORBAcsra will need to do some finish work on trail in vicinity of Petersburg Trailhead.
ACOE staff will check to see if yellow carsonite posts are available to install along trail near Petersburg Trailhead to help designate trail path.
ACOE contractor continues to finish removing debris/stumps from Petersburg Trailhead. Plan is to have parking lot slop toward park entrance (Southwest) for water runoff; likely 1 ft total drop along the 140' parking lot width. Most stumps have been removed this week.

Progress Report 7/26/2015 The parking lot should be a subgrade this coming week. The location of the picnic shelter and all other amenities has been determined. SORBAcsra is required to build the concrete forms for the Bike Wash, Changing Room and Bike Repair Station.
This work will be performed this coming Saturday, August 1st at 9:00am at Petersburg Trail Head. If you can help, please contact me at farrow.rp@gmail.com.
