We got a tree off of Deep Step. Let us know if there is another.

There is a tree across the trail about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile in from the bottom road crossing going CW. It is toward the bottom of the long step climb. Going CW it's not a danger as you are climbing but going CCW it is right in the middle of the downhill and it's up off the ground.

Thanks Mark we'll try to get out there (or have someone get out there) in the next couple of days. We only had limited time before dark last Thursday and removed the one on Deep Step that we had already marked for removal.

It has been very dry so we needed some rain. It rained for about 3 1/2 hours over FATS today most of that after 5pm. Probably rained less than an inch. If the radar is any indication, the heavier yellow/red patches managed to miss FATS. Will need at least 24 hours to dry out so trails should be okay by Wednesday unless we get more rain.
Thanks!

Did you lose a phone at FATS? If so, check out this FB post.

Due to wet trail conditions (2-3" of rain last night plus rain earlier this week), the USFS, Long Cane Ranger District, has implemented an official closure at FATS. This temporary closure is the real deal and applies to all trail users (bikers, runners, hikers, walkers, etc.). FATS appears to have been hit hard with rain last night night and this morning because the Ranger says there was water flowing and soil movement across the parking lot this morning. p.s. Per this USFS Notice, the Call Before You Haul Hotline seems to be not working.

Hotter and drier (predicted) weather appears to be ahead and things should dry out pretty quickly.

There is trail erosion in places from that deluge of rain that closed FATS and there are some trees down so be aware!

2 trees down on Great Wall. Going CW the first one is just past the bench before the bridge and the second one is about 1/4 mile past the bridge.

Rain pushed through the area yesterday afternoon and again this morning with another band coming through shortly. No deluge and the rain was badly needed. Trails should be great starting tomorrow. And due to that "cold" front pushing through our temperatures should be a few degrees cooler (than in the recent past) early in the week.

The USFS will be resurfacing the parking lots at FATS this week. Although the trail is open, don't surprised if the parking areas are closed late Tuesday night, all day Wednesday, and possibly early Thursday morning. While they are resurfacing the lots, please do not park in front of the gates; rather, park along one of the adjacent fire roads.

A series of three pop-up thunderstorms rolled across the area late afternoon through early evening. The rain gauge at Thurmond Lake indicates just under an inch of rain fell. FATS will be too wet to ride on Friday - please don't ride the trails. Thank you!

Hiked Big Rock with Morry this morning and cut back a bunch of face slappers and sticker bushes. Took out a few trees with the hand saw as well. Trail in good shape. Saw five bikers and the tread seemed dry enough to handle them. We got stung by yellow jackets on the east side just down from the nice rock feature that you can ride over or around. It looked like a critter had dug up their nest. Sorry about the dog butt:

You're welcome, Tom. Hey, are you saying TC, Wine and Modoc are in bad shape? We had a work party at TC and Wine just a few weeks ago (I know you did some work before hand) and were hoping they would still be in decent shape. We hiked 1 1/2 miles into Modoc Father's Day weekend and it looked super. Have things changed?

The recent storms left a lot of trees, limbs and debris on all three trails.

Update from this past weekend's work party out at FATS: sorbacsra.proboards.com/post/25665In doing the final paperwork on the work party and tying up loose ends, I discovered something that I want to share. I've been part of SORBAcsra work parties for well over a decade now sometimes organizing them, sometimes just working at them but I think this is the first time in all these years, with a large work party, that we have actually had everyone come who signed up to come. We did have one person who signed up but let me know in advance they could not make it and we did pick up a person on Saturday that had not signed up. Why does it matter? Because when you are planning a large work party with lots of tools, people and equipment, it is so helpful to be able to identify the people you have to work with as well as the tools and equipment. It is critical that volunteers go out in teams of two for safety reasons. Thanks so much again to all the volunteers, you were amazing!
