The 10th Annual Best Dam Ride is on Sunday April 21, 2013. SORBAcsra will support the mountain bike portion of the ride, with all proceeds benefiting the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation. We need volunteers at each of the three sag stops and volunteers and National Mountain Bike Patrollers to ride and support participants along the mountain bike route (Bartram Trail). If you are interested in being a volunteer for this charity event, please email dave koz. More details, including registration information, can be found at BDR 2013 (Active.com).

A few of us are planning on doing the Thurmond Epic ( sorbacsra.org/Trails/ConnectorRoutes/ThurmondEpic.htm ) at the Best Dam Ride. Plan is to check in as soon as possible (7am) and then hit the trail ASAP. We'll drop water at the end of Bartram for the way out, and hopefully some of the sag stations will still be set up on the ride back. If anyone is interested, let us know! It will be a ride at your own pace sorta ride. It's too long to try and stay in a group.

What's the time frame for food? I've only shown up for food after taking down the sag stops. Don't remember what time, but there has always been food left.

The ride starts at the Below the Dam Park> Below Dam South Carolina Recreation Area is a popular park just below J. Strom Thurmond Lake Dam along the Savannah River. The park is located on Power Plant Road just off South Carolina State Highway 221 near the Visitor Center on the South Carolina side of the dam. Link to mapRegistration starts at 7am and the ride begins at 8:30am.

Is there a playground and power plant (I guess that is what you would call it) there?

Great weather and turnout for the Best Dam Ride! The longer distance road riders road riders on the roll (the person giving them the send off actually was a rider herself and soon joined them): The road riders that were headed out on the western routes: Here come the mountain bikers! The mountain bikers cresting the hill and headed for the Bartram Trail input point at West Dam - 1st sag stop at Lake Springs - Lake Springs mascot - Trooper (very handsome and sweet rescued boxer) - 2nd sag stop at Petersburg - (my apologies to the rider walking across the middle, panoramic pics don't work well apparently if there is movement in the frame)! Although the climb out this morning was long and the air was chilly, it was a welcome sight for bikers as a last leg back down into the Below the Dam Park - Lunch was served (this was later in the day, most of the riders had eaten and were gone)

Good times today. That downhill to the "finish" was awesome. Five of us left early to put in some big miles, two of the guys took relatively shorter routes (but still big miles) and three of us did the who dam thing. I was out just under 7hrs to ride the 65ish miles, Ted and Nevin beat me back by about an hour apparently, those guys were moving!
I passed two guys in Mistletoe who were riding bikes with racks and panniers packed with (I'm assuming) camping gear. Wanted to stop and chat about their ride (where did the start, where were they going, etc) but with about 40 miles down, and still 25ish to go, I didn't want to stop unless I had to. Anyone know those guys??

First of all, great pics Angela!! Thanks to all the volunteers at the sags and the event in general. What a wonderful day it was getting to see old and new friends. Chaos and I logged 40 miles and this is the furthest she has ever ridden (woot woot!). The trail and the temps were perfect! Hey Dustin, BTW, you were not an hour behind Ted and Nevin, more like 30 minutes. Good job dude!

Thanks everybody for the SAGS, you guys are great, Thank you Angela and Becky for looking after the clothing we ditched at the first SAG. Had a Fantastic time and we must of raised a considerable amount of $$ for Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation. Very cool!

Trails were in GREAT shape other than 2 wet spots.. Not bad considering the rain we've had!

Was the entire route free of non-riders or other trail obstructions? I climbed over at least half a dozen logs. Some I would usually ride, but I was either too tired or didn't want to risk a crash early on. There aren't any that are really bad, I recommend leaving them, they're all riders to some people. I do want to say there was a big non ride on Bartram, on singletrack just after coming off a dirt road, right in the middle of a turn. But I can't remember where exactly, and I don't remember it being there on the way back...maybe someone cut it out during the day? Or maybe I just don't remember...it's all kind of a blur.

This was a fantastic ride, it was really nice having this as my first event after returning to the CSRA. Huge thanks goes out to the folks running the SAG stations. Hope to see y'all soon on some more rides!
