Don't forget this event was started to bring an event to the CSRA for our members - we of course were very excited to have it embraced by so many people from outside the CSRA as well.
For those who have never participated in it, it has a great grassroots feel to it, the venue is great for both participants and those who come to watch the event since we have cheering sections that line the road coming into and back out of the finish line area and there is a great spot on the hill coming up section 5 where people stand and ring the cowbells bringing the riders up the hill and then heading for home.
Whether you are a solo rider (have had 19 lap solo riders) or a group of buddies ready to sign up for a 4 man team it's a good time.
These dollars go straight to SORBA-CSRA and help maintain our trails, buy and maintain equipment, fund events (our Fall Bikefest coming up is free to all participants), etc.

I had a great time last year at the BD riding on a 2 person team and was hoping to race again this year.
Unfortunately, Oct 6th is also the Savannah River/Augusta Canal Adventure Race. I've done this race the past 4 years and was hoping to encourage other SORBA-CSRA members to compete this year, especially with what appears to be more interest in off-road duathalons, and triathalons in recent months.
I'm not suggesting that the date be changed just for me, but wanted you to be aware that there's something else going on that day in the CSRA.

So sorry! We literally only had the options of October 6th with a back up date of October 13th to work with between everything else going on.
We'll probably have some other people who want to do one event over the other as well. There should be enough people to fill both events - the whole Ironman Esi event over the past three years really has a lot of people doing multiple sport events and that is a very good thing!

We met last night to make sure we could pull all the elements together quickly enough to pull off the Baker's Dozen, with a ramped up action list we think we can, we will gauge rider interest by the end of today and report a decision quickly! Make sure you take the survey above if you think you will be participating! Thank you!

We are good to go for the Baker's Dozen! The first critical elements are handled (Open date + rain date identified, timing company lined up, and USFS date approval) still lots of work ahead but those things have to happen to move forward.
We'll have the event up on active.com shortly but in the meantime, here are the categories for 2012 along with two provisional categories that if they are well represented could become part of the lineup!
Categories (trophies to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place) Solo Male Solo Female Two person team Three person team Four person team
Additional categories (trophies to the first place winners only this year)
Coed four person team (at least two females) Four person team (everyone 55 years old or more)
Time to start getting your team together and getting ready for this event!

Once we grow the event we can add more categories - we'll try them provisionally and if they are successful they will become part of the lineup!

Four of us headed back out this past Sunday for some more trail work at HC. Cut out another 20 or so trees (S3 and S4), and there's probably 4-6 more in S4 and S5 that we'll will take care of next weekend. Nevin ran the DR in S2 and S4, the areas that had become severely overgrown and were pretty much unrideable. There was one burned out bridge in S2, and we used hands and McCleods to remove it, then shape the ground and make it rideable. The bridge that should be replaced is still rideable, but has a broken stringer which is resting on dirt. Hopefully we'll get a work party formed and get it replaced. It won't last another 12 months any way you look at it.

Just a reminder - we have added two provisional categories this year, the 4 person coed team (must have at least 2 females) and the 4 person 55 and over. If we have good participation in those two categories they will more than likely become part of our regular lineup in future years, if they don't they will more than likely go the way of the DoDo bird as we try other categories. So if you are considering one of these categories, gather team mates and spread the word to others. Remember a respectable showing of 16 laps would mean each team member would only have to do 4 laps each (or the stronger team members could ride more laps) 4 laps of an 8 mile course spread out over 13 hours - easy! Work commitments this fall and the need to help man the volunteer side of this event will probably keep me from competing this year but I would love to see these categories stay in the lineup for obvious reasons

Since this is our major fundraiser for the year and we are 7 weeks out, please pass the word along to your friends and fellow mountain bikers. The posters should be ready and out next week but getting the word out is critical. This truly is a fun event and the teams who are serious and come to win blend very well with the teams who are a group of friends who just want to challenge themselves, have fun and do an event right here in their own back yard!

Talking to people I know that have not participated in this event before reminded me to point out a few things about this event. If it progresses like it did during the first run (2003 - 2008) it takes a couple of years to build it back up to its max number of riders (we cap at it 125 riders to keep its unique flavor). So those first two or three years are absolutely the best time to come out if it is your first time in an event like this. Also a great time if you have some pre-teens or teenagers you are trying to work into the event scene to get them used to the feel. If we had enough young teams it could be a possibility for a category at a future Baker's Dozen! Great couples fun too - there are day tents set up all over the place giving people a home base to hang out while one rider is out. Technically on a 4 person team, you could have everyone else ride one lap while Lance rides all the rest. Go out and ride Horn Creek - ride the race route (I've posted the map earlier in this thread), go look at race times in previous Bakers Dozens, remember if you only have to ride it 4 or 5 times over a 13 hour period I think your grandmom could probably do that! Do it for the fun and to support your local chapter!
