This is very tentative, we are waiting to get the cert cards from the USFS for our certified sawyers (at least two or three of them should be ready to go just need the card in hand).
If they arrive in the mail this week, we will probably set something up for next weekend and try to hit Big Rock/Tower. We will need spotters but it also sounds like we will need people with rakes to clear debris off the trail as well.
Just putting it out there in case we can get this set up, more to come!

So I'm not a chapter member but I am planning on heading that way for the weekend to ride FATS (first time) from savannah. I am more than willing to help with the clean up just hope to get some riding in weather permitting.

Hi Alex - Thanks so much for the offer! If your travel plans are flexible you might want to consider waiting a weekend before you come. We've had reports of storm damage on the main loops but won't know the extent until we can get people out there. Would hate to have your first visit to FATS under less than good conditions and given the amount of wind and rain over FATS last night there might be even more damage. We have a pretty good chance of more thunderstorms through the end of the week 50 and 60% each day. So potentially the trails might be too muddy as well! Alex we had quite a bit more rain yesterday and even more forecasted for today and then on Saturday afternoon. Our outlying trails get a lot less traffic so you would probably be okay on one or more of them on Saturday morning but I suspect you would find yourself doing more trail reconnaissance than actual riding given the number of trees that were down on Bartram (teams have cut about 25 trees off Bartram in the past week) and FATS (over 20 trees down that we will begin to remove this weekend). In addition with the amount of rain I think even on our older trails that drain better you would still find yourself riding through some wet areas. We'd love a report on those older trails but if this is your first time coming up to ride our trails........would like it to be a good experience. We'll probably go out on Saturday morning to address some of the trees on Big Rock and Tower and then do some work on the main trails on Sunday morning. We welcome everyone who can to come out and help when we have work parties! But also understand with riders coming from out of town and over 150 miles of trail to ride if they are going to venture past the FATS, they might want to plan a weekend when they can get a lot of great riding in and then maybe hit that donate button on the homepage sorbacsra.org/ or buy some stickers to help support the trail work! Your call either way and you can email us at sorba.csra@gmail.com

Work party went well today - had sawyer and spotter on Big Rock that took out 7 or 8 trees that were down. On Tower the sawyer and spotter took out 7 or 8 as well. Two or three on both sides could have been taken with hand saws.
Had two clean up teams so handled all of Big Rock with some raking, lopping, debris removal as well. I got the brilliant idea to pick up a large white plastic container someone had dropped next to the trail....when I picked it up it smelled putrid but wanting to get it off the trail I screwed the lid on and kept walking. The others were ahead by a little but had stopped to do a little trailwork so as I approached the both responded with ...what is that putrid smell. At that point I realized the contents had been dripping onto my shirt and shorts. My workparty teammates quickly zoomed on up the trail and no one wanted to be my friend! My clothes ended up riding in the back of the truck on the way home they were so gross!

If whomever wound up with my loppers would, just hang on to them until next time I see you. I had a pressing date with my 80 y.o. mother yesterday and could not wait around for the after party.

It looks like a lot got done this weekend, thanks. I will be working in Augusta today. Are there any trails at FATS that still need debris cleaned off? I can toss a hand saw and some pruners in my camelback and should have about 2 hours to sweep a trail.

Those small pines damaged during the controlled burn will continue to topple so although I think the trails were pretty much cleared by end of day yesterday, you never know what might have come down just over night. At least if you have them with you and you spot something that was missed or fell during the night you can handle it on the spot! Thanks and enjoy your ride.
