The vastus laterals and rectus femurs are two parts of the quadriceps muscle (the other two being the vastus medial is and the vastus intermedius). How can he tell that somebody is using just two parts of that 4 part muscle complex to extend the knee? I would wonder the same thing about the semitendinosis and the biceps femoris (AKA the hamstrings) although since they have different tendons maybe it is possible to show them acting independently.
