2 really good routes I've ridden lately that are long and can be done with water bottles that are refilled. And no camelback on your back making you hotter than you already are.
1. Christmas Party Ride and all of Bartram. You will need to shuttle it with a car at West Dam and a car at the start, Keg Creek. Start at Keg, ride Christmas Party Ride. You can get water at the ranger station in Mtoe and at your car you parked at Keg Creek. I did the first part with 2 bottles and then left Keg with 3 bottles to ride to West Dam.
2. Today we did a 40ish mile version of The Connector. One water drop at the Price Mill/FS 617 intersection that you pass twice can supply the refills for the bottles. If I had to call this route something, I'd call it the "Hike a Bike Connector". Why? Well, you ride all of Modoc, Connector to Turkey/Wine and ride all of them. Then turn around and ride ~2 miles of Wine. Then depart the trail and "hike a bike" for about 100 yards up some steepness to a clearing that is rideable. Ride out of the woods to the gas lines, then out to Key Road at a red gate on the east side of Key Rd. Then take 618 to 619 and just ride pavement back to Modoc.
Some don't mind a camelback and some couldn't imagine riding even as little as a lap of the Canal w/o a pack on their back. I'd fall outside those two groups and will go to great lengths to ride w/o a pack/weight on my back.
Both routes put the most strenuous riding at the front/middle, with the end being more in cruise mode. The 2nd ends with a 11 mile pavel ride and the first ends with the Old Bartram (which is pretty flat).
