We are organizing a work party for Saturday, May 19th. The work will involve mowing, lopping, etc on Wine Creek (since Turkey was burned there is only some touch-up needed). This will involve mowing with the DR mowers, using gas hedgers in some areas and some basic standard lopping as well as spotters/loppers with each person operating the equipment. There is a job suitable for everyone! Put it on your calendar and lend a hand. More details to come.

Work party is on for next weekend if we can get enough volunteers.
Time: 8:00 am Location: Wine Creek
Workers Needed: 15 - 16
Operating 2 DR Mowers, 2 gas powered hedgers, 2 string trimmers, and loppers
This will be the main work party on Wine/Turkey this year (minor touch up on Turkey also) - the annual mow-a-thon.
Respond here if you can help or send email to sorba.csra@gmail.com
Goal is to have the work completed in about 4 hours

Nevin's in and unfortunately, I'm out (about 95% sure I'll be on a business trip). Which trail head?

Sent out a broadcast email last night (a lot of people do not read the forum) to our members. We have almost half the people we need to hold the work party, hopefully by tonight we will have the rest. We only have one scheduled work party at these two trails each year and this is it, no time to plan any additional ones except the stray emergency sawyer parties to cut fallen trees since we are trying to cover 150 miles of singletrack in our inventory. As the week moves along and weekend plans become clarified, please volunteer and lend a hand! Thank you! Right now the high next Saturday is predicated to be 83 - bring your bike and take a spin on these two trails after the work party - we'll have snacks and sports drinks after the work party you'll be set to go to enjoy the trail afterward!

I will be a game day decision. Have had a sick family for about a week and not quite caught up on life.

Understand!
We picked up some more volunteers today so are getting closer to the number we need if everyone comes. We have enough now that we won't call off the work party if we don't get more, just might not get all the work done!

The work party is on for Wine/Turkey Creek - be sure and check the forum (I'll also send an email to the group that signed up but I don't have everyone's email address) since there is about a 30% chance of thunderstorms. Normally that would be the afternoon showers but the patterns have been a little strange lately so check here before you head out. Bring plenty of water and work gloves if you have them. Insect spray would be good as well but we will bring some just in case. We'll have snacks and sports drinks for after! We can still use a couple more people (we've had a couple that have had to drop off the list) so if your plans have changed and you can come help we'd love to have you join us! Thanks

Looks like the weather will be perfect for the work party tomorrow - temps in the 60's and low 70's and 0 chance of rain (still check here in the morning before you head out - the weather is so fickle right now!) For turn by turn directions from your house, use this link - click on Turkey Creek and get your directions! maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=112493191138240861154.0004351308c52f1b7228a&ll=33.795982,-82.147264&spn=0.040585,0.046606&z=14 Don't forget your bike if you want to ride afterwards, the weather will be great, even if there is another sprinkle this morning the trails up there will be in great shape for a ride!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out for the work party this morning. We had 14 adult and 4 junior workers (two gals, two guys) all working to get the trails cleaned up! We were able to finish up right at noontime with Wine Creek (chainsaw work on 4 trees, two DR mowers cutting a wide swath on either side of the trail, 3 hedgers catching the things the DR mowers won't and loppers doing the tidying up). Finished up with some pecan pie muffins and sports drink - a lot was accomplished! With the cool temperatures, once Wine was complete, a group of 4 went over to Turkey Creek with the DR mowers to work on some spots between 4.5 and 6 miles. [ Stinging Nettles! A lot of these were cut. There are some nettles on many of our trails but Wine and Turkey have more than their fair share and makes the annual Mow-a-Than all the more important! In the lower left of the pic you can see some of the Virginia Creeper I mentioned in another thread, the Stinging Nettles have a slight "hairiness" to them and are individual upright plants. Creeper is viney once it gets to maturity and they do look quite different. Before! After Part of the cleaning crew hard at work! Packing it in. The beautiful weather made this job much more pleasant than it has been in some years

Looks like you guys had a great day.. Ian and I got the canal trail in 110%, with cutting a lot of stuff back and sling blading some of the higher grass.. Need a saw (a pocket folding saw would do) on one of the short up hill sections, but other than that we got it done.. Didn't do Razor's Edge, Ian was to pooped by the time we got there..

We rode Turkey and Wine today and they were just awesome. Thanks to all of you for taking care of them last weekend. Wish we could have been there to help. Only thing we ran into was a large tree down on TC on the Key Bridge side of the boardwalk.
