Hiked a little bit of Turkey with my brother and daughter yesterday. We started at the culdesac at the end of fs617a. Hiked to the confluence of Turkey and Stevens creeks. There was one tree across the trail, probably 4 feet off the ground, and not to big. Turkey could sure use wheels. No wet spots anywhere. All in all it was a great day to be out.

The Ladies Group hit TC today. Myself and one other spouse took a chainsaw and cleaned up several trees. We ended up with around 5 or 6 between PB and mile 5. None of those we cut would be considered riders.
Thanks for your help Nevin. Hopefully we'll have another USFS chainsaw clinic SOON and you'll be a part of that.

Turkey Creek was in great shape today after the burn. There is only one rider tree across the trail - all others were apparently cut-out before the burn. There is one short stretch that is closing in with the nettle. Might be able to get by without a major workparty here this year. I regret not having a camera. There was definitely a picture of the month out there with the new vegetation already coming in.

I have never seen Turkey Creek like this. It is the best I have ever seen it. Almost surreal, like a painting at times. Big views thru open woods. Great flow. Hardly any vegetation to deal with.
Turkey is the best I have ever seen it....right now. Give it a couple more weeks before it subsides, I'd guess.

Rode today first time, and don't know why I had not sooner. Awesome ride, even in the heat. One tree down non rider, other than that, the trail is clear. I can see where you would want to ride now before it gets grown up in spots where I can see where you cannot see the trail.

Why is this thread titled "2012 Hickory Knob Trail Conditions"? Anyway, there is a large tree that needs a saw about 2.9 mi in from Key Rd.

Oops, I didn't notice the year for trail conditions when I posted yesterday.
Re: 2011 Trail conditions « Reply #26 on May 26, 2012, 7:15pm » Turkey is beautiful right now and it was not blazing hot in the woods despite it being over 90 degrees everywhere else. You need to ride it. Only thing down is a large tree on the Key Bridge side of the boardwalk.

Rains have made for some major growth on the trail.. Some areas, you have to look for the trail...

I was nice while it lasted. Now TC is about the worst I've seen it (except for when it is under water). Trees & trash everywhere.

Some additional sawyers have received their cards and hopefully more will soon. Was waiting for a report to come in and after what was found on Bartram, FATS, Keg, Hickory Knob - just knew the report for the outlying trails would not be good!

I have confirmed God hates me! Now that I have time to help with trail work, it is hot as Hades with the humidity to match. It just wilts me in no time.

That's why we really like to have routine maintenance taken care of before or after the hot summer months ......unfortunately these emergency jobs just aren't quite as considerate!

With the recent tree clearing and mowing, Turkey is good to go now. Rode Turkey (and Wine) today. Both trails are really in very good condition.

In good condition. With the leaves down the views are coming in. Trail needs wheels. Just by chance there were 2 or 3 groups that all got there at the same time. 12 riders total. Great time. Wine also needs wheels. Lost the trail a few times because of the leaves.

Brian. Glad you had a good time riding Turkey. Looks like you had a better time than I did. I rode it for first time last week and would rate it the the "bad" category. So many leave and sticks all over the trail, it was tough to know where to go in alot of spots. ONly place worse that I have encountered was Wine. With FATS around, I can see how these old and outlying places just get neglected. It's a shame, but only so may work parties opportunites to go around. Oh well, I guess it all just depends on your perspective. I rode Boyd pond yesterday for a few laps and found that to be a much more enjoyable and fun ride. Please with really cheap gas on the way back, an added bonus. I am trying to ride all the trails on the back of the Jersey, only LCHT, Hickory, and Baker left to go for me--but I have heard that Baker Creek is in even worse condition, so we'll see [plus I beleive it's closed]. HMMMM looks like I went off on several tangents here. Must still be in turkey coma.

HMMMM looks like I went off on several tangents here. Must still be in turkey coma. You're right, it totally depends on your perspective. When we did our big ride two Sunday's ago I thought both Turkey and Wine were in great shape, perfect actually (other than all the creeks being dry). Leaves and sticks down in the fall don't make a trail bad IMO, that's just part of the season. Part of the beauty of MTBing is riding through the world as the seasons change, and seeing and experiencing that change first hand, being out in it, not just looking at it through a window as you drive by. I love leaf season, it's my favorite time of year! The crunch under your tires, hidden roots and rocks (the few we have anyways), slippery corners. Keeps you on your toes, and makes old trails feel new again. Good on ya for getting out and exploring the other trails, too few people do that.

Brian. ...So many leave and sticks all over the trail, it was tough to know where to go in alot of spots. ONly place worse that I have encountered was Wine... I would say give Turkey and Wine another chance, either when you are riding with someone who knows the trails or when the leaves clear off the trail. We rode Turkey and Wine on Sunday and both trails were near perfect. However, I can understand how someone could easily lose the trail with all the leaf litter and be disappointed with the ride. If you haven't ridden Keg Creek yet, I suggest you wait or ride with someone who knows the trail; parts of Keg can become invisible with the leaves. Hopefully, we will see you at Mistletoe on December 2nd for the Explore the Trail Ride.

I have done Mistletoe and Keg Creek. Liked those alot more than Turkey and Wine. I acdtually rode Mistletoe via the Backdoor and found my way. Guess I was just lucky. Plan on doing EET ride at Mistletoe if I am not too banged up from the Jungle Cup Obstacle Race the day before in Conyers. Group riding is always much more fun. I would like to do the Christmas Party ride in December . . . it would only be appropriate in my opinion. Perhaps on the 23rd of DEC--the official "Festivus" day of celebration. We could finish the ride with the "airing of greivances" and "feats of strength."

Dustin: I actually rode Turkey a couple of hours before you did that day and spent alot of my time getting off bike and clearing stuff away from trail. Looks like my hard work paid off, if you had a great ride. My return trip was much faster than the out
