The course for the Baker's Dozen will start at the trailhead and travel down the campground gravel road. At the stopsign the course turns right onto the paved road. At the next stopsign, the course turns right onto a paved road. This road turns into gravel after 1/4 mile. The course enters Horn Creek Trail on the left after 1/2 mile. The course follows Horn Creek trail all the way back to the same gravel road where you entered the trail. The course then follows the same route back to the trailhead. This is 1 lap.
A lap is about 8 miles long, 6 is singletrack and 2 is gravel/paved. The only place where there will be tow-way traffic is on the gravel/paved roads.
When you enter Horn Creek trail (we call this section 2), you will be going slightly downhill over a lot of tree roots and some bridges. There is a little climbing. You will then cross a gravel road and enter a 1 mile climb ( we call this section 3). You will then cross another gravel road and enter a very fast section. It starts flat, then goes downhill, more flat area, bridges and then a little climbing (we call this section 4). You will then cross another gravel road. This section starts flat where you can get very fast, has bridges, a very sharp right turn on a climb that if you don't make the turn, you will fall into the creek. Then the course climbs for about 1 mile. During this climb, you will past the trailhead and end at the gravel road where you entered the first part of the trail (we call this section 5 up to the trailhead and section 1 from the trailhead to the gravel road).

You can find hotels in Augusta at the Washington Road exit. I think this is Exit 199. There is a Hampton Inn, Courtyard By Marriott, Holiday Inn, Springhill Suits, Amerisuits and Sleep Inn. This Exit is only 3 miles from Exit 1 in South Carolina where Highway 230 is located. Lick Fork Lake has 9 camp sites, however they are first come, first served. Cost is $7.00 per night, which includes water...not at each site, but at several locations throughout the campground... (no electricity). There are showers available at the day use area. Not every site has fire rings. Each site has a picnic table and some have pedestal grills. Each site is different size, but most people either use tents or "small" RV's (remember no electricity, but people can use generators from 7 am to 10 pm.). There are SST's for restroom facilities in campground and at trailhead and pit toilets in campground. Hamilton Branch State Park at Plum Branch SC also offers camping. They have 200 sites. I do not know the cost. Try looking at their web site www.southcarolinaparks.com. Hamilton Branch is about 12 miles from the Horn Creek Trail. The Army Corp Of Engineers has a campground called Petersburg campground. It is located in GA just across the Dam on Clarks Hill Lake. This is a link to them www.reserveusa.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/nrrs/ga/petb/newindex.html

I just got done riding and working on Horn Creek Trail. The trail is in great shape about 98% of the way. The other 2% is in horrible shape. Standing water in numerous places, the longest being about 150' long in section 4. Section 2 has a 50' section with standing water. There are another 30ish or so mudholes along the trail.
All the above should be worked on before the Bakers Dozen. The two long sections have sideslope right above them that we can move the line to and it should be high and dry. It is where the trail should be anyway. Both of these are locations in the last approved reroutes that simply did not get build. The 30ish mudholes just need to be debermed. This means the edge is knocked off the low side and the hole is allowed to drain.
If you ride out there, please do not make these sections wider by riding on the outer edge, or around them. Stay right in the middle of them and the trail will stay narrow singletrack like we like it. Riding around the mudholes is what causes the trail to get wider. It is not a smart thing to do.
So, who is in for working up there next Saturday or Sunday? We need small crews of folks, pulling bob trailers with tools in them just stopping at the mudholes and fixing them. We need two small crews for the section 2 and 4 work. Getting this done the weekend before the race will great as if it rains during the week of the race, all the mudholes should drain instead of collect mud.
We won't destroy the trail for the race. And I want to race, so that means we need to do this work. I can't do it alone. I need help and I'd like to get it from the people that rarely help and plan to race in the Bakers Dozen. Who is in for Satuday at noon.

With the recent weather forecast we will have the Baker's Dozen on April 16th.
Any changes will be posted here by me.
