Riding Bartram today, I took a look at my computer, which showed 15mph. Then I looked off to my left, at a nice little view of the lake. It was a beautiful day, and I was glad to be out on my bike. When I turned and looked where I was going, I saw it. A pine tree, about 6" around, on the inside of the corner. I had just enough time to think "oh sh" before I heard a solid THWACK! and I was on the ground.
Hit it square and solid with my barend. Smooooooooth.
Luckily I went down in a bunch of soft sand, and didn't get even a single scratch. But my bike did molest my leg a little, so I'm kinda sore and stiff. Got away very lucky, could have been much worse.
Pay attention everyone!

Nothing quite like a little honesty with a small tree. Ask YetiChick about her brushes with a small tree on the tight area in the Great Wall Thursday! I was at Food Lion this afternoon buying more 3x4 bandages. Didn't keep her from riding 32 miles at FATS this morning though! MD

Another word of advice: don't put opened sugary/sweet food/candy in your jersey pocket. I had a bag of powerbar energy gummies, ripped the corner off, ate a few, rolled the bag up and dropped it in my jersey pocket.
Then a horsefly started riding my butt. Literally. Ended up with several bites on my legs, some of which were thru my shorts. And it got one bite on each cheek...and not the cheeks on my face. Itches.

They need no bait, and it had nothing to do with the leftover stuff in your jersey. The horseflies will wear your azz (and the back of each thigh) out at Petersburg and Hickory Knob. I try to remember to spray my rump when I ride at either.

feeling better today? I know you were stiff Saturday night. Other than itching horsefly bites I'm good now. Spent most of yesterday on the couch, my shoulders and tricepts were really sore and my calfs were especially sore, it hurt to walk...not sure if it was from the ride or the crash. Usually if it's from the ride it'll be my quads that are sore though, not my calfs.

Hard to believe you have been here this long and never experienced this before. I'd agree the snacks in your pocket had little to nothing to do with what happened. What you described has been going on here forever. Old Tower Trail was the worst for flies, IIRC. Not so bad with FATS, and I am not sure why. If I had to guess, I'd say the FATS is less in the bottoms and the climbs out aren't as steep so we are going faster. It always seemed like the flies found me on a steep climb and stayed with me to the top. That is just a guess though. Flies are the sole reason I have a pair of baggie shorts to ride in. Flies can't bite thru the baggies but do bite you thru the lycra. And they will follow you for days with nothing in your pocket.

Yep, this was my first experience with horseflies...ever. I've seen them plenty of times, but they've never bothered me. That SOB followed me for several miles, over 20 minutes, it was drafting. Bit me 6 times, 4 of which were through the shorts. I tried to drop him, punched it on a DH on the woods road in Wildwood, doing over 20mph. Nitro caught up to me and informed me it was still there. I finally got it when I stopped to grab some food, and I was able to swat it down and stomp it.
The bites didn't hurt that bad, nothing like getting stung. But the itching that started later that night...ugh, it's driving me crazy.

I've done 40 mile rides and been 100% the next day. But I've also been sore after one of the time trials at the canal, that was only 12.5 minutes of riding, but it was full throttle the entire time.

Naw, cuz my heart and lungs give out before my legs do! The only time I've been sore lately is when Dale P force marched me around Keg carrying a Pulaski and a shovel. I was so sore the next day I could barely waddle around the house.

when i first started riding a few months back my thighs and calfs hurt, but they never hurt anymore. My body quits on me before my muscles do, I attribute that to not being sore.
