The Old Bartram (from P'Burg to W.Dam) is very much a beginner's trail. Should we be a little more discriminating about the size of "rider" left there? Riders of any size don't bother me on the intermediate and up trails; I can choose to ride or walk; but it seems to me that a beginner's trail should not present very much in the way of hazards/challenges. What say you?
As long as we are on the subject, what is the maximum height of log to leave on the other trails that the better riders can clear comfortably?

I think small (3" or 4") logs should be left on Bartram as long as there's good sight lines to it. The beginners have to learn on something right? What's a good size log to leave on other trails? That's a good question, and one that most people can't agree on. I really like riding logs, and I've gotten comfortable riding stuff in the 12"-18" range. Above that and it depends on how the log is positioned on the trail, and how fresh I am at the time. If it's a foot or less, leave it. Bigger than that, use your judgement. And more 'advanced' trails should have larger logs left.

We are on the same page then. I feel like if you can climb a curb ( we all did as kids on "comfort" bikes), a 4" log should not pose an issue. The ones big enough to cause some real effort or will snag the chainring is something else though. That section of trail should be very easy IMO.

I don't mind leaving small stuff but keep in mind many kids have there first mt bike experience there and some parents will have kids in trailers.

I believe the COE's intent was to have a beginner, family-friendly trail. With that in mind, I'd say remove all but simply roll-over stuff. Of course, what is "roll-over" to an experienced rider on a 29er is different to a kid on a 20" bike. Next time I'm talking to them, I'll ask.
BV: what say you? What do you remember from discussions with COE in the design / RFP stage?

The primary reason I'm asking is since certification isn't needed for cutting on Bartram, I intend to start helping with the chainsaw work to give Dale, Jon, and the Drawdy's a break. I want to be sure I am doing the right thing for that particular trail.

But Brian W's point about trailers is well taken. Old Bartram could be remove about everything and New Bartram leave some as Dustin described. Maybe a little bigger even.

On Old Bartram, you can't leave a small tree if you wanted to! LOL We have tried--as in 2" trees, etc. They would be rideable by anyone, and give beginners something to practice. However, when you go back out to the trail, they are gone! LOL
Saw a couple riding the trail last year with their 6 kids. Three were in a trailer (triplets), and 3 on bikes. I think the oldest was about 6. A lot of families camp at Petersburg and use the trail. Love it!

I promised I would find out what COE thought about trees left down on Bartram. Talked to Ranger Pepper Shields yesterday. Her take is that the Old Bartram (P'burg to W. Dam & Lake Springs) should be kept clear. I suppose saplings would be ok. New Bartram could have trees that would require some technique to clear, i.e. pulling up the front end / bunny hop.
