I need to request permission for a Collegiate Race to be held on a SORBA-CSRA trail. Who should I direct my request to?

Yeah, like dgaddis says, contact pfarrow at comcast dot net. Also keep in mind that we have to get through the IMBA Summit first. Things are getting crazy as we get closer to the summit.
Our next big event is the SMC 2010, scheduled for Oct 2010.

Whaaa? Permission from SORBA? For what - potential event conflict, volunteers, ... ? I thought we had to get permission/permit from the land owner to hold a SORBA event.

I'd be interested in the rain plan.

EdgeE: Did not mean that permission comes from us. Paul has the best idea of what is around the corner, what is coming up. He can also give you the contacts that you will need to make your event a success. I'd be interested in the rain plan. Rain PlansAren't you going to be attending every minute of the IMBA Summit? Why not ask it at the appropriate venue? Ask those that make the rules, but only selectively apply the rules. SORBA has written the rules but conveniently ignores said rules. I have said it before: Why are we the only chapter that seems to preoccupy ourselves with rain issues? How many slams did I or my SO take over the rain issues during the BD races? No one sacked up and took our backs. Quite the opposite actually. Hey, we have the mountain bike world in our back yards. Speak, but speak to those that make rules, not the minions. I am not a spokesperson for mtb'ing this area. I am and will always be a minion. MD

MD OK, who should I ask at the Summit that is associated with the OP to gather info on the OP's rain plan for their event which may be on one of the local trails. You seem to have some insight into this. Dustin posted a link to an old thread that I looked over. Looked like to me several of us had your back in that thread. Dustin and I to name two. Do you disagree? My concern is for the local trails of the CSRA. To me, what others do with the trails they maintain is not germane unless there is something to be learned from it. I have learned something from watching races go on in the rain. And that is that a MTB trail will come back from a rain event in 6 months to a year. I just don't want to see that happen to trails around here. Perhaps you disagree and that's fine.

First off, I apologize for my tone toward you. It's not an excuse, but I ended up with a wicked rash after cutting the tree off TC Sunday, and am on a 10-day dose of Prednisone, along with a lot of Benadryl. Since yesterday afternoon, I am a bit loopy. Guess it was the vines climbing the trees. Guess I better get more educated. You have to remember that our house was the address used for registration and money, and Yetichick's email address was the POC. We got hit with a lot of requests, some unreasonable. I forwarded some of these to higher-ups in SORBA, and we never received responses. I have sent probably two dozen emails to mother SORBA and have yet to receive a single response. That is where a lot of my frustrations originated. It was hard to be diplomatic with some of the people, especially when they got personal. Now when I see their posts on mother SORBA, I get sick. You are correct that there are threads that backed us. I was wrong there. Sometimes the requests, here at the house, got rough. Thankfully, I have a smart and supportive SO. A huge part of the SMC allure is due to the fact that, like it or not, we can run a race like that rain or shine. Modoc got hit with a deluge last year, and it is fine today because a million tires didn't just keep pounding the dirt, over and over again. These old school trails can take a hundred sets of tires over them, one time, in less-than-stellar conditions and bounce right back. I was thinking that SORBA needs to police its hypocrisy on race issues. I figured that since you are not known for biting your tongue, you could get some clarification on why a head is turned for 200 riders beating up a course before/during a rain event, but by golly we better close (insert trail name here in GA/SC) due to recent rains. My .02 cents worth. That's all, MD

Apology accepted.
I can't really control main SORBA (or SORBA CSRA), but my input carries more weight locally.
I recall the "pig trail" in Macon getting slammed a few years ago in a wet race. I'll never go to Macon to ride that trail, and that scenario had no negative effects on my riding. That said, I wouldn't want what happened there to happen here. As then my riding would be effected. But the main reason is I also think our main volunteers are not the racer type and the racer type (generally) doesn't volunteer much on trail work. (There are exceptions, of course). The way I am thinking, the folks who do the most work would be non plussed by having to work on a really fugged up trail for an event they were not a part of and most likely disagree with racing on wet trails.
So my reasoning for beating this dead horse is to continue what we have in the CSRA. Pretty much a race free set of trails except for the annual event we put on - and I'd agree with your statement that the SMC on the Dark Star Loop can go rain or shine (each rider take one trip on each trail, not multiple laps and spends 2/3 of the event on pavement or gravel). I'd be all for supporting a collegiate race, or any race that comes with a workable rain policy. I have thought it thru til I am blue in the face and still have not come up with the perfect solution. I doubt one exist.
I am interested in the all weather trail session at the Summit. That along with some well placed gravel roads could be the solution....race goes on same date with alternate course. There may a configuration at FATS that allows for 85% gravel, 15% single (say a mile or two) that could be worked hard after the race. I think there are ideas out there worth looking into.
But right now if the two choices are racing rain or shine on trails that SORBA CSRA maintains, or no racing. I'll take no racing. Others may disagree and that's fine.
