Saturday i rode the bartram, wow, it's now a tral in need of some repair. i hope i'm preaching to the chior, but Satrurday would have been a good lesson on what happens when you keep riding the trail when it's wet. the wet spots that use to be on the trail are now WIDE boggs and spots that have never been wet are now mud puddles. Some places need drains cleaned and others need armoring. i'm tied up this week and weekend, but i will get some bricks out there and over the next month put the call out for help to plant them and clean some drains. It was quite the eye opener after almost 3 months of no trail riding.

Jimmy You're right about the mud but I've seen way more water on it. I believe that with the FATS closure, a lot more traffic is coming to Bartram

Imagine what FATS would look like if open 24/7/365.

exactly, this is the lesson people need to see, and it applies to all the trails.

exactly, this is the lesson people need to see, and it applies to all the trails. I agree it applies to all the trails. But you gotta agree that if open FATS will see 5-10 times the number of riders as Bartram or any other trail we have. Perhaps in the really bad winters like 2010 has been so far we should no post directions to other trails from FATS and should instead post gravel road rides. Something to consider.

I think when FATS is closed Bartram gets the beating.
Bottom line: It's just bad the damage has happened and now there is alot of work to be done to try to fix it.
The orginal intentions of my post was hopefully riders will see first hand what happens when trails are ridden when wet and maybe a positive can be made from a negitive. it's prime example.

There are some problem areas that hold water and a few mud holes. Back in the fall I noticed a few areas that the heavy rains caused some damage (near the 1st bridge) and a few other areas. In the most part the trail tread has stayed hard (IMO)
A few areas that seem not to be draining well are an area near a gravel (closed) road close to the sailing club(?) road, and the areas close to petersburg that were armored. Also the "new" rack and ride" sections of Lake Springs Loop see to be holding water.
Bartram does have a lot of organic material for the trail bed.

At least the water puddles seemed to have hard bottoms.

I placed a few bricks in a couple of bad spots between the Sail Club road and the next closed gravel road.
I tried to create some drainage in the bad spot just west of the closed gravel road and placed some natural rock in one hole. I’m not sure if it’s going to help. That spot could still use some bricks. Maybe 50?
JimmyC, If more bricks are available from the original source, I will be glad to relocate a truck load.

thanks dichapmanga. What I'm planning to do the next 2 weeks is to drop about 4 pickup loads on the way home, appox 120 brick total, at the trail head. I'll post when i get them there. If you would like you can get some from that pile, or if you want to get with me i'll drop half closer to the work.

Our contact has been out this week so no bricks this week either. Last Saturday and last night Sid and I started at the Peterburg lot and worked to the ditch with the "half switchback". We cleaned some drains, set some bricks I brought from home and filled in a few places with gravel. We'll finish up this portion Saturday Morning.

Worked on the trail Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, using brick and gravel to repair some wet spots. The B.O.M.B. group rode up on me Sunday and help me with the spot between Site #1 and the bridge, speaking of that spot it could use a little more work I just ran out of time and materials.

I just had an unusual amount free time last weekend (wife was out of town), some extra bricks and a spot where i could get a few 5 gallon buckets of gravel. i'm interested in seeing how the gravel with the bricks holds. It's e-z to install, rake out the clutter, pour it out and tap it down.

Ross spent a lot of time this summer putting gravel in some of the corners at the canal trail. It rode great.
The gravel is all gone now, absorbed by the earth.

I have some matting to put underneath things that will get absorbed by the earth. Alot of it. Come get it to put on any trail you want. Liz will love you for it.

finished fixing the bad spot between site #1 and the "no handrail bridge". i was suprised saturday to find a small run of water crossing the trail as i was digging. i would have never thought this spot would have been this wet.
