Sunday afternoon - Good ride! 3 trees down in Section 2. After riding the end of Turkey Sat., the short section with minimal overgrowth in Section 4 seemed clear & wide. Thanks EdgeE. We are going to hit HKSP this weekend, then the airstrip at Bartram needs mowing badly and we will probably get to that on the 19th. Briars and weeds are overtaking that area, as they do every year this time. Hopefully we can get out and hit HC soon. Will let you know! Alternately, you can always set up a workparty yourself and get it done. Sounds like you only need one sawyer and a couple people to run a DR or two. MD

I've been clearing a little each week as I can. I would have set up a DR party but my weekend calendar is full thru July. The trail is in OK shape & very ridable, and Wine & Turkey (and I'm guessing HKSP) need it more. I didn't want to take any potential labor away from them. Strangely enough, HC did seem more open last week, maybe the "spring weeds" have died, the tall grass seed heads have dropped, or something? I would like to cut out the downfalls, but waiting the next opportunity to become chain saw certified.

Edge, if you hear of a certification, post it here. Right now we are dependent on 3 or 4 people to do all of the clearing and that puts a big burden on them. It would be nice if some of the rest of us could pitch in.

Rough ride last night - trail is over grown and needs the DRs. Cleared a few smaller trees, but still 6 in Section 2, 1 in Section 4, and 1 in Section 5. Received many scratches due to briers, brush, and limbs. Even knowing the trail, I lost it for a second and went off trail in two spots - small Sweet gums growing in the middle obscuring the way. So, I give. The trail needs work! How about next Sunday (8-8-10) early AM? I should be able to pick up the SORBA trailer, if it's available and Ok, some time Sat.?

The trail needs help. No doubt about that. It also is a part of the SMC route, so it NEEDS HELP prior to September. There is no option.
Let's list this as part of the workparty schedule. August 8, 2010 is fine, although giving more lead time leads to more volunteers. Maybe the 21st or 22nd. Start time can be 8am. I will be there with the trailer. I need you to respond with:
- Where on the trail needs DR work.
- Where do we need people with loppers.
- I will cut the trees out. Exactly where are they in sections 4 and 5?
- Any other info that can streamline this workparty.
MD
Let's get this one done. We have to all start thinking SMC.

I would say most all of the trail needs the DR - Only sections 1 & 5 are Ok? without.
Loppers - very little overhead stuff to deal with - maybe the end of section 2, if any.
Trees - Section 2 trees are spread out throughout. Section 4 tree in tight turn @ midway point in section - right @ log pile above fixed switchback washout. Section 5 tree is @ trail end, just after crossing bridge, right below parking lot.

Unless things change, this Sunday (8/8) is my only available morning to work in the near future. I would like to run a DR. Would be nice if we had the other DR going and someone with a chainsaw. The earlier the better, but 8 AM is ok with me.

I plan on taking out the trees Saturday morning. Hope to be done well before noon. I have a swamper, and plan on pulling the BOB.
Post your intentions on the workparty forum and see how many volunteers you get. I am not available Sunday.

MD, I pushed around my schedule and can make it Saturday. Are you willing to bring the trailer Saturday?

If I pull the B.O.B. around HC for a lap, stopping to cut trees, that is going to take a couple of hours, minimum. YetiChick will be with me, so I don't need assistance.
A good work party would need several people out there with you, all taking turns with the DR and the hedgers. This has not been advertised so I don't know how many you will get at this juncture. If you are convinced that the entirety of HC needs the DR work, then you are looking at a two day project. If there are only a couple of sections that need it, then that can be accomplished in a half day. If you have yourself and one other person, then perhaps you could hit the worst sections. I can always put a DR on my utility trailer, and you can bring that back to my house when you are done.
My original plan was to go out Saturday morning, cut trees, and survey what was really required to make the trail useable. I haven't ridden HC in a coupe of months, but I figured that the last mile of 2 needs it, 3 probably needs help. and 4 needs it. That is the norm anyway.
Those are my thoughts. Tell me yours. Don't forget that by announcing this for Saturday, we are competing with the Explore the Trail Ride.

Nine trees cut out today.
Mowing:
- Section one could use it. - Section two must be cut. - Section three could use it. - Section four must be cut. - Section five could use it.
Entrances to all sections (as seen from the gravel roads) seriously need to be trimmed back, and these can all be done very well with a hedge trimmer.
That's it for now.

Morning ride - no trees down. Section 4 is now the most over grown. Wish I had made it another 100 yards on section 2, still a few thorns around & section 4 is too much, had to get off & push the bike through.

All tape from SMC removed. Trail was a blast. MD I was there yesterday as well, probably parked next to you (green Element). Either you noticed the two non-riders down or you're a better log hopper than I. Been a long time since I've ridden that trail. Fun.

Been a long time since I've ridden that trail. Fun. Saw your Element. My Explorer and F350 were parked right beside it. Very happy to see riders and hikers on the trail. We all got lucky as the park is closed until probably next spring. It was open for a day... Cut out 14 trees today. Found the time to ride a bit too. I seriously hope we are able to put on another event here. Great trail. Got to admit that I have been on the Cannondale Caffeine 29er hardtail for the past couple of weeks. Have ridden Horn several times. Back on my Speccy Epic FS today. Really like the FS side of the world. MD
