I went to order the Deuter Bike Patrol Pack but didn't see it on the website. Here's the response I got:
Hey Dale, I'm afraid we're currently out of stock of the Deuter packs. I'm working on finding some new packs to take their place, and I hope to have them in stock later this fall.
Thanks for your patience,
-- Spencer

Thanks for the info Dale. I hope the replacements are as good as the Deuters. I'll check with Spencer to see if I can find out when the packs might be available.

I recently got a Camelbak HAWG. I wanted a BIG pack I could use to really long rides, so I wouldn't have to drop supplies somewhere along the route. It comes with a 100oz bladder, and has room to hold a second 100oz bladder. That's right, 6L of water! That's enough for an unsupported ride of the SMC route. Plenty of room for food, tools, clothing, etc. The retention system keeps it snug and comfy so it doesn't bounce around on you. Mine is an '09 model. The '10 models are even bigger, and have an improved back to help keep you cool.

The big advantage of the BP pack is cost. Bike Patrol folks get a huge discount. The out-of-stock pack was a 2005 model so I guess when IMBA ran out, there were no more of that model to be had.

You are right Dale. I confirmed this with Spencer yesterday. He said the new packs should be available this fall.

IMBA has the bike patrol packs back in stock - they appear to be the same as earlier model (Liebe has one) and they are "on sale". Original price was $65 - ordered mine for $58.50 - good price. Also, othe NMBP products are on sale - the jersey is regularly $40, on sale now for $36.

IMBA store now has a new NMBP pack for sale - by Deuter. Looks pretty nice but at $95 is almost twice what I paid for the earlier model and a hydration bladder is extra.

The amount of actual out of pocket costs just to say you are an NMBP member can add up real quickly. Membership, jersey, socks, now a hundred dollar pack, etc, etc.
Just sayin' that it shouldn't cost what it does to volunteer to aid an organization.
My .02 worth, FWIW.

The costs on everything are REALLY high. High enough to keep people from joining.

If anyone needs a pack, come by the shop and talk to Phil about getting one like this or another brand at a discounted NMBP price. You can always put your NMBP patch on any pack. Muy expensivo indeed!!!!!

It's worth more than you can imagine, and not just for entertainment purposes either.

I wouldn't buy this pack. But the older model @ $55 was a very good value, IMHO. None of the NMBP gear is required. So only out-of-pocket cost is membership - and you get some "free" stuff: NMBP socks and 2 bike mag subscriptions with each renewal. I thought it was worth the extra fee. If I didn't, I would not have joined up.

Check with your accountant too...I think equipment you buy that is used for NMBP volunteer work is often times tax deductible or at least partially...don't forget mileage to and from the trails too. I too thought the new pack is pricey, but most nice outdoor equipment is expensive. Like Ted stated, check with Phil...he might be able to even get you the same pack and then you can add the patch to it

Shouldn't it be lower? 3) Have yet to see one free issue of DR, even with many assurances, from many levels. I'm done. I made the point as eloquently as I can. I think I will go camping, bike riding, boating. MD

I think I will go camping, bike riding, boating. MD Volunteers come in all shape, sizes and predispositions. Some like to dig in the dirt, some hate that and would rather run a chainsaw. Some do no trail work, but work event registration or a feed station at our events. Others are NMBP Patrollers. Not everyone has the physical strength or mental predisposition to do all the above. MD is one of SORBA CSRA's best volunteers. I have said many times I wish he and Barbara would go back to AZ and come back with 20 more people just like them. That would be great. Why is the cost of NMBP membership higher? I dunno, good question. Here is my answer. The NMBP is looking for a higher level of involvement and commitment than a rank and file member. In return for this investment and commitment, the NMBP members get perks that rank and file members don't get. I got my Turner frame for $1285 delivered thru the NMBP. Retail was $1900 at the time, I think. The non-delivery of the Dirt Rag mags to MD are unfortunate. But to come onto a public forum and say one is quitting because they didn't get $15 worth of magizines.......comes across to this poster (perhaps not you) as petty. MD is anything but a taker and is one of the SORBA CSRA's main givers. But the words used paint a picture opposite of that to me. I hate that for my friend, MD. I would like to see MD's "flounce" of the NMBP post removed and this one removed. I hope this makes sense and I haven't pissed MD off.

I'm done. I made the point as eloquently as I can. I think I will go camping, bike riding, boating. MD I'm done meant "With this thread". You are way off base. With pretty much everything said. And to say that we should delete a thread because it may hurt someone's feelings... Whatever. MD

OK. Thanks for explaining that. I would have read your post 1000 times and not come to that conclusion....because dues are higher and I didn't get a few mags, I'll stop posting in this thread. Sorry I was off base.

LOL I have to reply to this!
Amazing how someone writes something with one idea in mind, and how someone else reads it and comes up with a completely different conclusion.
"I'm done."
Here is the translation: My 5th wheel is packed and hitched to the truck, the boat is hitched to the Explorer; and yet I am sitting here posting on a thread! Ha!!! I'm done! I am shutting the computer down and going camping, biking and boating!!! Woohoo!!!!!! Throw a few beers in the mix and life is good!!!!
