Went down to the canal trail today to create a re-route around the section that's fallen into the river. Found a good line, started raking and cutting down saplings. Got the trail about 80% roughed in when I heard a loud noise, then 40+mph winds settled in. Not gusts, just constant, fast, loud wind.
Whoa.
I look up and found a hole in the canopy of the woods and the sky looked like something you read about in the Bible. Then I started hearing trees cracking and popping and there were smaller limbs falling everywhere. Not gonna lie, I was scared, I was wondering if a tornado was about to roll through.
I grabbed my tools hauled it up to the railroad tracks, and back to my car. I kept my eyes upward, didn't want to get crushed by a big tree. Threw everything in the trunk, and went way faster than I should have down the tow path trying to get to pavement before the canal turned into a muddy mess. My lowered Honda doesn't do well with muddin'. The last 100 yards or so it was POURING. Glad I made it out when I did!
The good news: the section near the river will soon be open and rideable again. Well, part of it will be replaced by the re-route, but the fun, steep, rooty climbs are all still there. And the re-route has a fun roller section, and should flow pretty well with the existing trail. All that's left to do is rough in about 15 more feet, and cut into the hillside a little so the trail doesn't have too much side slope.
The bad news: I'm willing to put money down that every trail in the CSRA has multiple trees down.
Ross was also at the canal today, working on a different section of trail. Let's hear your story now!
