Hey guys, went down to the trail yesterday to ride a few laps and it's in great shape and clean.. I filled some of the mud holes with leaves and sticks to try to make a base and kinda sponge up the water.. I'm going to go down there some time tomorrow and try to get rid of a couple of the down trees.. I only have an axe, but I think I can do it.. The BIG one, I can't do anything with, but the other two I think I can..

So, the axe deal didn't work at all, but I did get a lot cleaned up.. A couple of smaller trees and other limbs had fallen and I got a lot of that cleaned up.. I tried to get some of the puddles to drain out..

Kudos to the guys who have been maintaining this trail. I rode it last week and it is great shape. I saw some sections that I had never seen before. Sweet...

I filled some of the mud holes with leaves and sticks to try to make a base and kinda sponge up the water You would be better off removing all the organic material from the mud hole instead of adding organic material to it. It will just hold water longer with the organic stuff in there. Better to add rock, but probably not readily available. If you had to add something organic to it, cedar logs made into an old fashioned cordaroy would work for a while. Best to not use pine for this. I have an extra copy of IMBA Trail Solution's book on trails I'd like to give you. I think you will like it. How can I do that?

Funny you mention that.. I was just thinking when it was damp, not the flood we had yesterday, train of thought was the "mulch" would soak up the water and then dry out.. I've got some bricks Jimmy gave me, my problem now is just getting them down there.. I can see how it would hold moisture though, my thought was that would be better than red mud.. Are you ever in the downtown area? You could leave it at Andy's.. I'd really like to get that brick down there, but with the construction going on, there's no easy way to get there.. I know one way by parking on the side of the road and walking down the tracks.. Maybe I can get Drew to help me out one evening.. Now would be a great time to tackle the bad spots for sure.. I've got two steel rods and I think 18 brick, so it would only be 3 trips, but if it's just me, it's A LOT of trips.. I wonder with all the wind today how it looks down there..

I walked some of it yesterday and it was looking decent. I'm debating heading over there after work to put in a few laps. Anyone interested?
Oh yeh, I was able to access the trail by taking Milledge down to the canal. It is easy, looks safe, and provides good access to the trial (through aquaduct park)

I wouldn't leave my car at the parking lot at the bottom of milledge, but I've ridden through there many times. The BMX track is just a stones throw from there.

Hey, if anyone can help me get those bricks down to the trail, it would be appreciated! I've done a lot down there, but I can't get those down there by myself.. Just call my cell at 706.726.3992 If I could get those bricks on place, it would make a huge difference I would think making it a greater place for all of us to ride.. Wouldn't take much time.. If I can just get them there, I can take them where they need to go..

I got some of the bricks down there with my wheel barrow.. NOT an easy task, and then borrowed some "excess" gravel and filled in some of the mud holes, or at least made them so they won't be so bad, kinda like giving them a bed.. All in all, I think the trail is in great shape, can't wait to go ck it out.. ;D
Busted a guy on a 4 wheeler, he was stuck so he had to eat humble pie in order to get me to help him out.. He was wedged between two trees in the area at the wood cross over..

Doesn't that make YOU an accomplice?

To be honest, I wanted to let the air out of his tires and leave it there, BUT, his 4 wheeler was right where I wanted to work.. Like RIGHT where I wanted to put some rock in.. Plus, if you'd seen this guy, you'd have helped him out.. He didn't mean any harm and was a little "slow".. So, yes, I guess I was, but I did the right thing at the time.. Now if it'd been a bunch of kids, they'd had to have figured it out themselves. PLUS, I wanted to ride later, and there is no way around that area except that gap..
Do you ever get a chance to ride down there? It's really sweet right now, but I'm sure when hot weather gets here, I'll have a harder time maintaining it.. I've got it pretty well, where I can ride with clippers one lap stopping from time to time and then ride regular the other laps..

Did about 3 hours of work on canal today filling mud holes with gravel as best I could.. Using a cloth grocery sack filled with gravel and carrying to designated wet spots.. Isn't to bad, but that's a lot of walking.. I think I did about 25 bags today, I think my arms are a good two inches longer.... Good day, won't be too long before it'll be to hot for this kinda work!

mosovich,
Haven't been on the trail in a couple months but a big THANKS for everything you've done. Hopefully in the next week or two I can ride the canal again when work levels out.

you're welcome.. Thanks for the recognition, it goes a long way and is very appreciated.. My wife keeps wondering why I go down there all the time and to me it's giving back to the sport I love and helping to provide a good trail for people to ride.. I live near by and ride it several times a week, so I feel I should do something to contribute. I REALLY hope I can keep everything in check with the over growth as warmer months get here.. That is probably going to be the real challenge, but I figure if I take 1 hour a week and do a little maintiance, it goes a long way.. I sometimes will ride one lap slow, picking up stuff or moving stuff and then I can ride several laps like I want.. It makes all the difference in the world.
Again, thanks, you've totally made my day. ;D

I'd say the real challenge is getting your peers to help out. Hoy veh! The DR's are at the ready when the sheet gets to thick this spring. I'll be glad to pair up if I can with you.

Well you were right the trail was rockin. You missed a good ride! Moisture levels were perfect, all the rocks are working great, and not too much growth to avoid on the trail. The only bad thing was all the gnats on the way back. There were literally clouds of them! I'm gonna try to get down there Monday night to cut the section along the river closest to the pump station. Thanks again for the hard work!

The trail was great last night! I have to agree with Drew on this one, what you have done in there is impressive and the rocks were very nice!
I doubt I will be able to contribute on Monday (In-laws get in town at 3pm), but hit me up the next week and I'll head down there and help!

Yeah, the canal was awesome last night. The gravel armor works way better than I expected! My only complaint, I noticed two or three places were some root balls had been cut out, leave those in! They're part of the fun.
