Only FATS is ever closed for hunting. None of the other trails are ever closed for hunting.
Once Oct 25th comes, the hunting at FATS will continue, but we can ride there as they hunt.
The main reasons for this:
1. FATS is a system of trails that blanket an entire area with trails. It is not legal to hunt across a legal trail. FATS severely limits the hunting in this area. And this area has a large deer popluation that hunting helps control. 2. Modoc, Turkey and Wine are linear trails that don't take up alot of space. 3. Horn Creek is a one 6-mile loop that doesn't take up alot of space. 4. We built FATS in the modern era and when it was put out for public comment, the only negative comment came from SCDNR - the hunting branch of gov't. So, the USFS and SORBA got together and came up with the first two weeks of hunting season (w/ rifles) as the plan to make the FATS less dis-tasteful to the hunters and SCDNR.
Worth noting: Hickory Knob and Baker Creek are no-hunting 24/7/365. Which is part of the reason we built them.

I guess I've always skipped this post. I have run/ridden Horn Creek for more 10 years, and encountered Hunters many times on the trail during hunting seasons other than Deer. Lately its been several Squirrel Hunters. The Jan. 1 date is the end of Deer Season, however, small game runs from Nov. 22 thru Mar. 1, & Turkey Season on public land is from April 1 thru May 1. I know they use smaller shot for small game, but they are the ones who walk around looking for game, rather than sitting & waiting for it to come to them, and during this small game season when I have had more guns drawn/aimed @ me. Always wear orange (or something bright) durnig any hunting season, Mid-November thru May 1. Nice trails allow bikes to move quietly & surprise hunter's who think they are the only ones in the woods.
Just a few words of warning.

Did you happen to ask what he was after? When I meet them on the trails, I try to ask, how's its going?, what are you after?, any luck? I'm always waiting for a response like - It's been slow but its picking up, anything that moves, & you'll know!

I distinctly remember an incident some years ago (don't remember what time of year) on Turkey Creek where I was rifding along in the back section (past the 5 mile mark) and a tree said "Good Morning"....After I got up, I realized it was a Turkey hunter in full camo...will NEVER forget that day

I'm in the Army. When I meet someone I don't don't know with a gun I avoid them! Be safe out there!
