Tsali Trail Weekend - SORBA (all chapters) will be convening at the Tsali Recreation Area to do some trail work, ride, socialize and eat the weekend of June 2 & 3rd. IMBA will be conducting some trail building classes (classroom at the Nantahala Outdoor Center and on the trail) to help bring this popular trail system back into good condition. Hundreds of people enjoy these trails every year but there are not enough local organized riders to keep it maintained properly. I will be broadcasting an email from Marco White, our local point person, for this trip. A good turnout from SORBA-CSRA would be great and it would give you an opportunity to meet a lot of other SORBA mountain bikers from across the southeast!
Trail Advocates – We really could use more trail advocates to report on trail conditions. I basically email this group of folks a few days before doing the newsletter to get updates on condition of the trails. They also report back at other times if they see things on the trail we need to work on or report on. This is a critical function to keep things up to date and help us determine where the next work party needs to be. If you are willing to help in this way and have a favorite trail that you ride at least a couple of times a month let me know. You’ll notice a lot of blanks on our trail reports below!
Trail News – Watch for upcoming work parties and sign on to help when you can!
Turkey Creek – No current report.
FATS – FATS trails are in really good shape looks like some lopping might be in order as the summer rolls along!
Wine Creek- Some work was done on the trail by Laramie Brown and his family that basically got the trail partially cleared but not sure of the current status.
Horn Creek/Lick Fork - Perfect condition ready to ride!
Hickory Knob – Lake Loop sustained considerable damage out on one of the peninsulas. There was a fire on the peninsula and they brought equipment in to make a firebreak basically some of the trail was obliterated in the creation of the firebreak and are no longer recognizable as trail at this point – not sure how much work it will take to reestablish those sections of trail but it isn’t extensive in terms of length of trail. Turkey Ridge is in good condition – Beaver Run has 6 trees down but good condition otherwise.
Canal Off-Road – No current report!
Modoc – No current report!
Long Cane – No current report!
Baker Creek – No current report!
Bartram (Wildwood) - Still closed due to construction.
Keg Creek – At last report, great condition.
Bartram Trail (Lake) – Good condition however there are three trees that need to be dealt with – one is partially on the trail but can still be bypassed, one cannot be ridden or easily overstepped so a bypass has been started by hikers and riders alike (need removal soon) and another can be stepped over.
Issaqueena - Good condition!
ORA Trail - Good condition!
VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION –
Thanks to Laramie Brown and his family for their trail work on Wine Creek!
BAKER’S DOZEN:
April 15th - Baker’s Dozen prep work – Thanks to Daniel Allen and Russell Hale for getting a good marker up on Bald Hill so riders would not miss the turn and plunge to the rocks below!
Thanks to Michael Drawdy and Russell Hale for their emergency volunteer help! The prescribed burn on Thursday prior to the Baker’s Dozen caused three or four burned trees to fall down across the trail that had to be dealt with that morning. Many, many thanks to Michael Drawdy & Russell Hale for working with Keith from the USFS to handle that task so expeditiously!
Baker’s Dozen Event Volunteers – Thanks so much for the great volunteers that come out year after year to make the Baker’s Dozen work. We could not do this without you and the compliments we get on this excellent event are a tribute to your hard work and dedication. Thanks to Paul Farrow who in my eyes continues to be Event Director supreme (and does whatever it takes, wherever during the event and afterwards), Robert Burton and Susan Collins who with helpers Daniel Allen, Colby Farrow, Chuck Messick, Casey Patterson, Marco White and Lee White handled the scoring, Bill Skipper who tirelessly maintained his post and announced the riders as they came in and additional set up and break down duties, Jon Taylor who collected parking fee money and helped with setup, Dale Parrott & Chuck Messick who helped with parking, setup and other duties as assigned, Barbara Drawdy, Alice Hale, Angela Allen, Susan Collins and Jesse Roberts who handled registration; Angela Allen and Teresa Farrow who kept the riders and volunteers fed. Thanks to Kevin Stich for providing the large tent and table for the rider’s sag area – and for coaxing a very stubborn generator into working just in time for the event! And many thanks for the folks that hung around after the event to help clean up the area, pull down all the tape & repack all the equipment after a very, very long day!
Thanks so much to Performance Cycles Inc. of Greenwood for providing mechanical support for the riders. I know a lot of riders benefited from having them available for quick fixes!
